There has been a lot of talk regarding Matt Campbell’s ability to recruit. The chart below shows how both Matt and Paul Rhoads recruited to ISU based on the national composite. Clearly, this doesn’t tell the whole story, but Campbell has improved recruiting in recent years after establishing himself.

The class this year isn’t done and will likely fall, but it would still be an improvement over where ISU’s recruiting was under Rhoads. Does this mean he can recruit at an elite level at LSU? Who knows? But at least we can argue off of some established numbers now.

2021 class is Covid class. No one is going to Ames, IA sight unseen.

LSU isn’t hiring Matt Campbell. Relax!

Personally, I would like the hire. He isn’t first on my list, but I think he would succeed at LSU.

define "succeed"... because anything short of being in the playoff pictured EVERY year, like Bama, Ohio St., Oklahoma, etc, is failing...

The guy has exceeded expectations at both of his prior jobs. Toledo and ISU are extremely hard placed to win at. Outside of his first season at ISU, he has never finished lower than 4th in his conference as a head coach.

Why can’t he compete at a high level when given the tools that we can give him? Again, he isn’t first on my list and he certainly has flaws, but so does every other candidate we are looking at..

I, personally, have a hard time predicting, even in my own head, what his recruiting would look like taking it from the context of ISU (with all its disadvantages) and putting it into LSU (with all of its advantages). There's too many moving parts.

At best, the trend upwards in his current situation makes me lean to the positive.

But I do want to point out his roster management as it pertains to the OL. As of completing the 2021 class he had 16 OTs on roster (as listed as recruits). Obviously some end up inside. I love to see that.

Roster management IS a significant part of recruiting. And making some assumptions and extrapolations that tells me he does recruit with a specific strategy in mind. Yes, I'm extrapolating out of OL recruiting to cover all recruiting- but one doesn't do that without an eye towards depth, development, and planning.

I mean, it's far more complicated than the simple statement I am about to type, which can be broken down and elaborated upon in great detail, but....

LSU did just recently fire Les Miles who averaged 10-win seasons and won a natty... and just fired another coach less than 2 years after the greatest season in college football history...

But...

Don't get me wrong, those terminations needed to happen. Just shows how astronomical the expectations are as head ball coach at Louisiana State.

exactly... and i don't think Campbell is a guy that can meet or exceed those expectations...
