The Mullen firing is even further proof on how risky football coaching hires are

Mullen, on paper, was a perfect hire for Florida
He was a brilliant offensive mind who had won at a school traditionally hard to win at. A school in the SEC west no less.
Mullen SHOULD have won championships at a school like Florida. Instead he’s unemployed in just 4 years with having added nothing to Florida’s trophy case.
There are no sure things in this sport.

Your point is correct, but A LOT of people worried about Mullens ability or even willingness to recruit at the highest level.

That’s a fair point but a lot of people thought the Florida brand could help him out and a lot of those same people are the ones saying LSU recruits itself.
I’m really not trying to make any broad points here besides just saying that hiring football coaches is a perilous game.
The guy you love today may very well be the guy you want run out on rails in 4 years.

Yes it is. Herman at Texas and Fuente at VT prove that recently

At least with them you can say “they were just flash in the pan G5 coaches who couldn’t do it at the power 5 level.”
You can’t say that about Dan Mullen. The man coached 9 seasons in the SEC west and won 9 games 4 times and 10 games once. He had the required experience. He had the required pedigree and worked under the right head coaches as a coordinator and it STILL didn’t work.

Barring a complete disaster LSU can not be hiring another head coach in 2 years.
That’s how you turn into Tennessee and Texas.

Everyone was concerned about Mullens recruiting ability and it turned out to be true

I think he would have gotten this year as a pass had he not done stupid shite in the past like fighting coaches, saying recruiting doesn't matter, and being a total dumbass explaining losses with excuses.
In general your point is spot on. I got the hire when they brought him on and it had some upward trajectory but definitely isn't the right gut for permanent elite success. Everything is a risk

Mullen is also only a failure because he completely and utterly gave up though. He's been disappointing on the whole, but Florida easily could have gone 10-2 or 9-3 this year if he didn't decide to stop coaching after Tennessee. That's not run your coach out of town territory.

Even if he had gone 8-4 but they looked like they had fight or at least some sort of drive to get better. The lack of improvement as the year went on really was an issue.

Just look at the people on this board freaking out because the current head coach of a contending team hasn't quit midseason to come running to LSU.
This stuff gets driven by social and traditional media with unreasonable expectations and very short memories.

This.
The thought was he just needed to recruit well enough for his system but it didn’t work. He is a very lazy recruiter, which is the one thing you can’t be. If

Neither are as good of a coach as Mullen. Mullen had Mississippi State number 1 in the nation for a month.

FIFY. Mullen was only a good hire on paper if you assumed that he was going to have superior results at Florida vs. his results at Moo State. His performance is virtually identical, he just went from one program with no standards to a program with standards.
The takeaway: hire an actual winner and not someone getting mediocre results who “””could””” be a winner

That’s the thing though. How do you evaluate and predict that?
It’s obvious now that Mullen isn’t happy at the college level. Was it obvious when he was hired? If it was I don’t remember it.
How do we, or anyone else for that matter, know that Riley or Aranda or whoever else won’t feel the same in a few years.
This shite is a total craps shoot.

Yeah UF just running thru coaches at Least LSU has only had 2 coaches in the last 15 years. how many other Sec schools can say that?

I would argue that it’s easier to go 10-2 at Florida than it is to go 8-4 at MSU

I had NO DOUBT Mullen would fail at FL. He is AVERAGE AT BEST for an SEC coach. FL settled when they hired him. Man, I hope we don't settle for a Mullen.
Posted on 11/21/21 at 4:47 pm to CottonWasKing
This is the truth. I thought LSU should have hired him over Ed Orgeron.
