I was thinking of going with the google mesh system in the below link but do also need a router? If so, which one works best with google mesh? I’m technologically illiterate. TIA
Google mesh

One of the pucks is a router, you do not need an additional one.

ETA: Just realized you may be confusing router with modem. You do need a modem for your internet service as google wifi does not serve as a modem. What kind you need, as well as whether your ISP must provide it or if you can buy your own, will be determined by your ISP.

If you want the most plug and play network, I'm a fan of the amazon eero mesh system. An eero 6 with an extender is only like $120 and it works well for most people.

How big is your home? How much internet speed do you have and who is your provider? This will help determine if you can place your provided router in pass through mode.

I use nighthawk and bought an extra satellite for a home just a shade under 4K sq ft. It was expensive, but my shite is fast AF and I don’t have a dead spot in the house.

A modem hooks up to the ISP service, whether it's cable or dsl or whatever, and puts out to a regular network port that you're probably familiar with. You could plug one computer into it and get online, but we usually plug a router in here so that multiple computers and devices can share this same connection. So that's what a router does.

Wifi is yet another function, but in almost all cases consumer routers have wifi built in, so we just assume that "router" means wifi and "wifi" means router. Google wifi is a wifi router.

Complicating things by simplifying them, a lot of ISPs offer combo units that are a modem and wifi router in one unit. If this is what you have and/or all you can get, you will have to put it in passthrough mode so that it only does the modem stuff and your google wifi can handle the routing and wifi. Assuming you have cable, I will always recommend buying your own standalone modem instead of renting one from your ISP.

If you Eatel fiber you don’t need a modem FYI

I know I can buy my own and ISP doesn't require me to rent. Do I need to be careful of what modem I am buying? I don't want the motor to limit what the google mesh network is capable of. Essentially I don't want to buy a Ferrari mesh network and then put a camry engine in it

I'm pretty anti-Amazon but we moved from an older Orbi system to the Eero pro 6 (we had a wifi dude come assess and give some thoughts) and it's really improved our setup.
