My league is having a 2-man scramble for next month. Pairings are 1-16, 2-15, 3-14, etc. The "kicker" in our league is SEVEN drives are required from each player. This is what always gets me. I've ended up having to play his drives on last holes several times, because I did not plan well. Bogeys and doubles are no bueno.

I am usually paired with a player who only pulls 4-7 points in our Stableford format. Yep, he's not good at all. His drives are only 150 yards. He has some health issues, so he has gotten worse.

What would your strategy be to get in all of his drives? Take the first 7 he gets in the fairway? I've had to give up over 100 yards at times. Frustrating.

We have actually won once, but I played my arse off. I'm pretty good with long irons and fairway woods.
Thoughts?

Clearly you have to look at the Par 3s. If he can get on or close 3/4 of the time that is 3 drives.

After that, you gotta hope he can get in the fairway on 3 more shorter par 4s and just take what God gives you. If you have a 385 yd par 4 and he is 150...that leaves you a solid 3 wood or strong hybrid on approach. Even if you miss the green, play for an up & down.

The last one is up in the air.....maybe he hits a cart path and gets a good bounce...

Sure does not sound that fun.

Play his ball on short par 4s and hope he hits some par 3s.

Not really sure how to work around it other than that.

I'm not sure but if each player has to use 7 drives it sounds like the par 3's don't count.

I guess I should have said "tee shots."
Par 3's do count. That seems the most logical, but If he misses the green, I feel like I'm losing a stroke against the field.

I have fun, and take pride in playing with him, it's challenging and frustrating. He's a great guy, but his current game just sucks.

In that case I would hope he gets close on a couple of par three's and just try to get up and down on those.

If he is as bad as you say I wouldn't pass up on any half-way decent shot he hits.

Who are you playing with (like #7,8,9 etc...) This would determine my drive selection greatly.

ETA: my bad, I didn't read the whole thing. I would probably choose the best drives until you can only use the other guys drive. This would give you the best shot at scoring early if you need to "Forfeit" a few scoring holes later on.

We have anywhere from 32-24 players. I'm #1 or #2. My hdcp is 26 points in our league. The bottom guy pulls 7.
I think our commish adds the total points and then 30% ??? No idea. So ~33 points total.
5 points for eagle. 3 for birdie, 2 for par, 1 for bogey.

I usually look at 3-shot par 5's as a best bet. Just have to execute that second and third shot.
I am very familiar with the course we are playing. It's 4 weeks out and I'm already obsessing!!

MetroWest in Orlando.
Used to be one of the best in town, but Integrity Golf bought up a bunch of local courses and shite all over them. Has never been the same.

Anytime he hits a decent one, take it unless you hit an awesome shot. I would want to get his tee shots out the way as fast as possible. A high handicapper isn't going to hit you a good one late in the round with the pressure on him.

Par 3s are tricky, because you might stick one. If his is serviceable, and you aren't within 10' take his.

See if the group will let him play forward.

My group lets me go up a tee.
They are still past me several times, but it lets me hit some wedges and short irons into greens instead of fairway woods and hybrids.

A scramble should be fun. It would be more fun for him to play forward.

We have discussed this. I feel I can't bring it up, because it looks like sour grapes, and they will tell me that I have won with him in the past.
There are a couple of courses that we play, where he literally cannot clear/carry a hazard from the tee.
We do have a 70+ player that plays one tee ahead of where we play.

At the end of the day letting a guy play a more appropriate tee will increase the enjoyment. It’s a scramble which is supposed to be fun. Don’t sweat it. Just have him move up and give up the handicap shots or however you do it

First off I would watch him hit his driver and 3 wood on the range.

He might surprise you with the 3 wood. Most of these guys don't use enough loft and are straighter with the 3 wood.

Other than that short par 4's, par 5 that you can't reach in two anyway and par 3's.

Short par 4s where a 150 yard drive puts you at a distance you can reach, 3 shot par 5s, and any par 3 he hits the green or is in a decent up and down spot. It's hard to strategize since you can't expect his best on any single hole.

Honestly sounds like the league is screwing him (and you) if he isn't allowed to play up a tee box.

I don't like cheaters, but in this case I wouldn't judge if he put vasoline on his driver face to kill spin for a little extra distance or something like that.

Yes, it has become more of a challenge as his health deteriorates, but I'm not going to be the one that complains. He usually has a really good short game so we balanced out well, but lately ... ugh, it's rough.

Oh well. The name of the league is "All About the Fun Golf League," so I just need to chill and have fun.

I get too amped up. Like I said, it's 4 weeks away and I'm already stressing.
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.

Have him take lessons. Get drives up to 200 yards.

You have no idea. Here's a story for you about Mike "banana ball" Sullivan. Mike has one of the biggest banana balls you have ever seen. Goes as far left to right as it does north and south. Hits about ALL his clubs 150 yards, maybe.

LONG STORY ...
Remember the Golf Channel Build a Driver Contest? The Wilson guys who won, were at the local PGA Superstore demoing the club. Sully and his best bud Ed, talked to them about the tech, etc. Rep was SOOOOO confident that his driver could straighten out any swing.

Ed laughed and challenged the rep that if he could straighten Sully out, he'd buy the driver on the spot.
Sully gets warmed up and starts taking swings.
Banana ball. Banana ball.
Rep makes adjustments.
Banana ball. Banana ball.
More adjustments.
Nope. More bananas.
Finally, the rep makes the last adjustment he could possible make.
Sully takes a swing and the shaft snaps and the head goes flying across the bay.
Rep hands Sully a hat and says "get out!"

TRUE STORY.
