Thinking about adopting a GSP

Pretty much the title.I haven’t had a pointer yet, only had Chesapeake bay retrievers and labs. Any advice from the OB on GSP puppies?

For hunting? Just a pet? Both?

Mine is both. I’d say be sure to gun train early and often. Set clear boundaries now because GSP’s will dominate you if they see an opportunity to become the “alpha”. Some GSP’s are weary of water, so it’s a good idea to get him accustomed to water as early as possible. I took mine with me in the shower and every time I went fishing or was going to be around water.
Other than that, just normal puppy training and stimulation. Keep his mind and body active and you’ll have one hell of a dog.

Energy, Energy, Energy
Make sure to stimulate them mentally and physically, every day.
Crate train, and don't remove the crate too soon. They are smart and make you think they have it figured out, when they really don't

Best breed ever. Don’t be scared of the “lots of energy” thing. Mine is 3 1/2 and just a couple of runs around the yard a day is all that’s necessary. Very smart, loyal and sweet.

I have bought 3 labs and a boxer in my lifetime. I have never adopted any dog.

Hopefully you don't have to work. Because they like to run about 10 miles a day.

They are great dogs. I have a 10 month old female. She has tons of energy, loves the water and is crate trained. She can run a mile in 15 seconds flat...lol. She is well behaved and gets a lot of exercise. I would recommend a huge yard or bringing them somewhere to run in the open daily. She loves my 4 children and is very gentle with the kids and other dogs. She is also extremely smart and listens to commands. For us she is a pet and not a hunting dog.
Like others have said, if she doesn't burn off the energy every day that energy will turn into mischief.
