He has no ties to Texas. He didn't turn down Baylor, Auburn, and SC, to go to TCU.
He will stay put, like he said, before jumping on a non-elite job.

You can't turn down jobs you were never offered.

Could probably go to TCU and have full control. Those other schools wanted to put training wheels on him. Auburn is a great program but still technically a little brother school in the SEC West. Winning may not be easy. South Carolina is a dumpster fire as credible coaches like Holtz and Spurrier had mediocre results there and it’s been one flameout after another since.

Big 12 is wide open and I suspect this isn’t a complete rebuild given how good Patterson was for so long. If you are thoughtful and carefully planning each career move TCU is a better sport for him to succeed easily than those schools.

Also, maybe this LSU search has taught him he needs to make a modest step up to the big leagues and thrive before a major program will hire him.

Stupid people do stupid shite.

You don't turn down jobs at major programs because of cocked up fantasies about replacing Saban or being the guy at LSU, because neither one is going to happen.

Industry sources say Napier fielded interest from Ole Miss during the early portion of the hiring cycle, when he was preparing his team to play in the Sun Belt championship game. Buried in game work, he declined to speak with representatives until after the game (by then, the Rebels hired Lane Kiffin). Missouri inquired into Napier’s interest as well ahead of the Sun Belt championship game, before hiring Eli Drinkwitz. Later in the hiring cycle, Mississippi State and Baylor expressed more serious interest in Napier. In fact, the coach interviewed with Baylor officials in New Orleans the week of the national championship game. He learned then about NCAA sanctions that the Bears were expecting to receive—a turnoff.

Per this article he only actually interviewed for one of these jobs that people keep saying he turned down and never says that he was offered. Mind you this is a puff piece.

No football coach, who has any interest in career advancement, is going to turn down a job at Auburn. The job at Auburn would probably have come with a price tag of between 20 and $30 million. That doesn’t even take into consideration all the other tremendous advantages auburn offers to a college football coach.

Even more ridiculous is the idea that a coach would turn down the Auburn job and then take the TCU job.
