So my old arse nearly 13.5 old choc lab recently had some sort of episode. She was fine during day, let her out at night and she was whacked out. Hind legs real weak, disoriented, making left circles, wobbly, no balance, head down to left, eyes twitching... was in bad shape.

Vet in morning, they said vestibular disease. Old age, blood work came back fine. First couple days she was recovering seemingly nicely. Yesterday was like a huge regress, wasn't interested in food, still like disoriented and weak in legs, to put it bluntly, she's like a zombie dog kind of. Seems like vision got super worse, she stands weirdly half in half out her igloo, i have to force her to lay down on bed. I know dogs usually recover in a week to two normally with this disease. Tomorrow makes a week but the regression has us worried. Not sure how much she is suffering or not at this time being in this state.

ETA: on 10/5 i had a thread here calling out my dog getting old and her behavior getting weird. Her unusual late night barking has us wondering if that was a sign/sympton that something was beginning to go wrong with her now.

Our little dog went through this a couple of months ago, we thought she had a stroke but the vet gave us this diagnosis. I can’t remember what type of shot they gave her but it cleared up a few days after. Dont give up hope. Hope she feels better soon.

If you’re on the northshore and looking for a second opinion, I’ll post who we saw if you want.

Ask the vet about it.

I had a senior Boston terrier this happened to multiple times. It’s scary has hell when it happens but it does go away. I think ours had it over a week both times.

She still ate but we had to hold her up to eat and drink. She would stumble through the house like a drunk. Sometimes when they aren’t feeling well you have to add or substitute special food. For example we add wet canned food or deli meat to get them to eat.

My neighbor put his dog to sleep when this happened to his dog. He only gave it a few days. I thought that was way premature for this illness.

i had mixed some eggs up in her dog food the few days after it happened, had some leftover chicken once too. Last night she wouldn't touch food even w eggs.

I had a large breed dog who had it. The vet said it isn't particularly painful but they may feel somewhat dizzy. He still ate pretty well. He would fall on hardwood floors and get stuck under barstools sometimes. I will warn you that eventually they start losing control of their ability to control going to the bathroom. He wore diapers and I cleaned up a lot of poop. He lived for years and I finally had to put him to sleep at 14 yers old. We spent a lot of time loving on that boy.

Old dog disease is scary when you first see it because you’ll think it’s a stroke. Your vet should give something to help your dog deal with any nausea. The symptoms normally go away in a week but your dog will likely have occasional episodes.

Our 16-year-old black lab had this a couple of weeks ago. He already had doggie dementia, couldn’t hear, and couldn’t see. The additional symptoms made him so pitiful that we went ahead and helped him over the bridge.

We already had a plan in place for his leaving us—I’m not suggesting you should do this for your own dog. This was simply our experience with it. I’m sorry your dog isn’t feeling well.

My dog has had it for the past year. We started giving her two squirts of Koi Natural CBD oil each meal and this has helped out a ton
