I love this movie. The plot is a little wobbly. Acting is not great. But it has a creepy exorcist theme but it’s not a horror movie. It has that late 90s punk alternative soundtrack and film style that is different and interesting. It has a touch of breadcrumb mystery like Divinchi Code or something and that historical element is cool even though its fictional.
It has terrible critic reviews I suppose because it poses as true to life but is clearly fictional and it takes a giant shite on the Catholic Church. At the time it came out it was controversial due to its blasphemy and symbolism.
It had a 18 million budget and grossed over 80 so it was a financial success.
Anyway, I highly recommend it with the warning that it’s not everyone’s flavor for sure.

I liked it. Been over 15 years so I need to watch it again. I like these religious based movies. The Seventh Sign (1988) with Demi Moore is a good one.

quote:I thought it was supposed to be scary, but wasn't because I never understood what was going on in it. Maybe it's because I grew up as a Methodist. We don't stress The Bible like other Protestant churches, and don't have as much symbolism as Catholics. Just good folks you'd enjoy hanging out with on Sunday mornings.

One of those movies I just get a hankering to watch every now and then (add with Legion, Disturbia, Mr. Brooks etc)

I haven't watched it in forever. I don't remember much about it other than being relieved that the priest was straight.

I don't think it has poor reviews due to this as most critics couldn't care less about how the Catholic Church is portrayed in film (ever watch Spotlight?). I think it has poor reviews due to the plot being wobbly and the sub-par acting as you pointed out in your opening stanzas.

It was controversial among believers for embracing Gnostic Christianity, which was an early form of heresy, rejected by virtually all Christians, not just the Catholic Church.

One of the quick cuts to the outside of the subway during the subway scene is a shot from Money Train when they shove the bar through the window to stop the train after it hits another

Definitely liked it.
But will watch Patricia Arquette in most anything.
True Romance, Flirting with Disaster, Lost Highway...exception being her Sandler grab, Little Nicky.
Her best performance, Beyond Rangoon.

You just brought back memories of all the great late 90s thriller movies. I completely forgot about this one, and now I have a flood I want to rewatch:
Ravenous
Stigmata
Stir of Echoes
Frailty
Fallen
Identity
The Others
These were all very fun, lesser known movies. When they released they may have had popularity due to their uniqueness and quality, but over the years they have fallen behind the 6th Sense and such.
I am going to start a spinoff thread so we can get a list together of all the great late 90s-Early Aughts thriller/horror films.

Gabriel Byrne played the devil in both this film AND End of Days in 1999, receiving a Razzie nomination for the 2 roles (losing to Jar-Jar
).
I actually liked both films better than the average movie goer, although neither are on my radar for watching again.
