Your friend is an idiot. He probably makes at least $500K per year. How is it possible to not have any retirement?

You would be surprised.
You have to opt into your employer programs like a 401K or you have to pull out money to put into other accounts like a Roth IRA.
Some people party like rock stars and think that the financial gravy train will last forever.
At least my excuse for the size of my savings account is having kids and not snorting my paycheck.

I’ve worked in banking, and have friends in banking and financial services, from our observations there is little correlation between income level, and ability to manage money.
