If you don't give a NATTY coach a raise, you will never be able to attract great coaches, period. Woodward had no choice but to give him the raise.

You have to reward your guys, but you also have to make it clear what expectations are.

Any athletic director is basically forced to offer an extension and a raise after a season like 2019. If you don't, other teams have a feast negative recruiting you. "You see, the coach won a natty and the AD still doesn't want him!" Not to mention the media circus that would run nonstop on "friction in the athletic department between the AD and the coach."





ETA: The guy above that referenced the coaching ramifications is spot on as well. Not a good look at all when trying to lure elite coaches down the road to have a track record of not paying your coaches.
