For me, I’d like defense…

I want Coach O to stay the head coach. Let the man sign a lifetime contract.

An offensive coach that understands the importance of defense.

So not Kiffin.

I want an offensive HC. You can see what a virgin DC can produce vs what a virgin OC produces with our talent.

Detail-oriented very good-great recruiter. Either side of the ball is fine.

Defensive. Coaches who have more of a defensive background than an offensive background, usually do better in the long run

It doesn't really matter to me, so long as he is an expert in one of them.

He should also have a clear vision for what he wants on the other side of the ball. (more detailed than "the Joe Brady offense" for starters)

This. Defensive guys generally have a solid understanding of the overall game, and (usually) know how to attack their own good schemes... which is why they are always updating their stuff. They are aware of offensive schemes that give defenses trouble.
They may not incorporate those offenses, because they feel more comfortable keeping things contained in a battle, rather than go full-shootout. They also understand that ball control (time of possession) helps their defense a lot.

Offensive guys like Kiffin usually focus on outscoring you. They tend to think they will win shootouts, because their team will execute more often, and a couple stops is all it takes for them to win.

We've seen Saban (Alabama) and Patterson (TCU) swap over to offensive schemes, because that's the current trend in football. But I still think for a single game, like a bowl or playoff, they're going to be able to come up with a good defensive plan if they have the time to prep.

There is a difference between understanding something is important and having the players needed.

He has made solid DC hires. Just doesn’t have the bodies.

I just want a guy that can give the team a clear identity, has high football IQ can and hold down one side of the ball.

You hold down one side of the ball, you eliminate one variable that could contribute to instability or inconsistency.
