Russ Callaway, Coach O and why he left.

So I posted on the Geaux247 boards about Russ Callaway. Afterwards I was surprised when Shea Dixon responded to me and what news he revealed. A lot of us were big Russ for OC fans, here's my post and I'll share Shea's reply only because some jerk already put it on TigerDroppings and Shea said he's discussed it on the radio before so it's alright.
My post:
I wanted Russ Callaway promoted.
He knew the spread. He had already been in the building and knew all of our talent and their strengths and weaknesses. Russ also clearly had a great relationship and rapport with Max.
Peyton Manning: "The quickest way to screw up a young quarterback in my opinion is giving him no continuity, no stability. Keep changing systems and that's how you ruin a young qb. "
O wanted somehow to sell Joe Brady to the fans. Sell 2019 to the fans. That's how we end up with DJ, Munoz, and a guy who knows Brady running things.
It was a salesman trying to make a sale. It was not evaluating what was best for your young quarterback, his development, and the health of your team. It was trying to win the press conference. Not the game.
Maybe Russ Callaway would have done no better, but he has already shown he could get Max the plays quickly and that made him confident with a bad offensive line and little run game.. many of us who wanted Russ got mocked, but sometimes it's better with the devil you know.
Now, Shea replied that Russ Callaway made it very clear to those in the industry O to his face flat out promised him an on field job. He would go from being an analyst to at least PGC with a chance to be OC. He already had a great relationship with our guys especially with Max and was super excited to stay and continue his upward trajectory. Then next thing he knows he's watching O introduce Peetz as OC with DJ as PGC. What? He was promised to his face one job with a chance at the other and.. that's how he was done. (Not the first story I've heard like this regarding O and jobs by the way.) Russ' dad is a legendary high school football coach in Alabama. He's coached under Saban before. Grew up in the business. He knows how coaches treat other coaches. How you should anyway. It's a very small community as we saw when Matt Canada suffered finding many jobs after he was deemed difficult to work with here. This is the kind of thing going on behind the scenes. So Russ left and went to join rising star Joe Judge who was set to be the Mississippi State head coach at his Alma mater before the New York Giants interviewed him and gave him their job. Leach ended up there instead as the fallback option. Judge and Russ just beat the Saints on Sunday in the Dome.
Anyway. That's one of the many, many stories going on and shines a light on why we're with two very green coordinators right now and not established high profile guys. Guys don't want to work with or for O. That's the word in the coaching community.

Good stuff
In hindsight, Russ would have been a solid choice as PGC. I thought he was going to get that job.
ETA- and of course O wants to win the press conference. That’s what the idiot thinks will keep his job.

The same thing happened with Karl Dunbar, one of the elite D Line coaches in football- and an excellent recruiter to boot.

Russ would have been the better hire. Actual OC experience running a spread offense, to a high level of success, was already on staff working with Max. Better than a guy with no OC experience.
But that's not a splash is it? To go 5-5 and elevate an internal coach. Peetz wasn't a splashy hire but "Joe Brady! 2019! Remember the good times"

Callaway was also an excellent recruiter. Didn’t he have a lot to do with recruiting Nuss?

This has been crystal clear for a while. He pulled a idiot off the radio and hired him as his right hand man just to keep an eye out on the pulse of the fan base. It's Tiger Ree, and a few others sole purpose here.
Coming from a coach who said, "block out the noise" probably 20 times a week, he sure kept a close eye on the outside noise. Just about everything that has ever come out of Orgeron's mouth is complete bullshite.
Bring that one up to him at the next "Tell Da Truf Monday" Derek.

Callaway shouldn’t have been the Oc but it’s insane Mangas got the PGC job over him. Mangas helped an awful Dartmouth offense and has the distinction of being besties with joe Brady

I'm not sure of it but if he did he hit a homerun. As far as Dunbar, Saban really valued him both as a technician and recruiter. He was all in N. La recruiting for Bama and had a lot to do with Phadarian Mathis choosing the Tide. He wanted to come hear bad and was promised once Pete got out he was in. Saban was aware. Dunbar told Saban he was going back to the NFL unless LSU offered. Instead Ed O went with an inexperience grad asst i.e. Meatball

Dude, enough about Derek Pomansky. I read Bayou Bengals Insider when he was the moderator and he was reasonable and insightful about the program. He and Hunt had takes that were similar to coaches I know. Not like the frickin blowhards and whiny curmudgeons who direct so much of the BS here.

Russ was calling plays? He might have been throwing some gnarly hand signals on the sideline but im pretty sure it was E in his helmet, maybe Linehan.
Still kinda surprised Shea went that deep

Not just an idiot off the radio. A convicted criminal idiot off the radio.

Can you elaborate? Did O tell him to his face he had a job here? I know Dunbar is very highly thought of

Dunbar is from the Pete Jenkins coaching tree. He was assured by O and Jenkins that it was his job once Pete got out. Once Meatball got promoted full time Dunbar headed back to the NFL. In fact his daughter was a highly touted track and field star who was assumed to be coming to LSU. Saban wanted him to stay there once the deal didn’t go down at LSU.

You can arguably make the case Russ saved Os job last year and it’s possible Woody cuts bait at 3-7. What does O do, plays to he thinks ha we want with more Joe Brady offense?

6th post. Another Ponamsky alter created. Would love to see how many IP addresses line up with your alters? I’d out the over/under at 200.
