A source with knowledge of the situation has revealed to 90min that three clubs from Italy, two from Germany and two from England are showing an active interest in signing Pepi. Two of the three Italian clubs are in this season's Uefa Champions League, as is the case for both German clubs. All clubs involved play in their respective top-flight leagues.

What's more, 90min are told the fee for Pepi is set to "eclipse" the $13.5m initial fee - which could rise to $22m - Bayern Munich paid the Vancouver Whitecaps for Alphonso Davies back in July 2018.

Such an FC Dallas move. Develop a great youth player and ship them off abroad. Great way to keep local fans tuned in!

That's the norm for many clubs around the world and it's good for Pepi to face tougher competition.

It's only good if he goes to a situation to where he has a legit chance to play.

Yeah, it'd be cool if we could say that we have a striker on Bundesliga club in the champions league, but it would do Pepi no favors if he goes to like Dortmund or even Leipzig with Silva.

He'd be better off getting minutes in MLS.

Dortmund wouldn't be the worst move. Haaland isn't going to be there long and getting a chance to develop chemistry with Gio would be huge.

Haaland is going to be there through this season which anchors Pepi on the bench through May of 2022 with the World Cup set for for November 2022.

I'd rather him not go there right now.

Do you even go to Dallas games? Honestly curious. I had fun the time I went.

Anyway I’m excited for this kid. I don’t care where he goes as long as he gets playing time. There are probably worse things than being a Haaland understudy for a year, though.

ETA: broski makes a good point about the upcoming World Cup

Wolfsburg would be a solid landing spot, assuming the reports are accurate that the two Bundesliga clubs looking at him are in the champions league.

Yes I have gone to some FC Dallas matches.

I want to be a fan, but everything they do turns me off of it. Pepi had drawn me back in and I probably won’t get but a season of him.

It’s a terrible way to keep potential fans involved. I am a hardcore DFW guy for every sport aside MLS. My interest is there, the way they run the club and league just makes it very difficult to care.

MLS isn’t a destination league so teams will always sell their best prospects

It’s another revenue stream for a league that struggles to turn a profit

Hell most the owners don’t care about winning and just want that US market tv money, that owners get access too.

MLS using that Brazil or Argentina model of level league would be the best we can expect. Good young domestic talent, sold to Europe, helps national team and then old dudes come from overseas to keep playing

I think it’s terrible for the more hardcore fans like us but at this point Dallas still just needs people to consistently come through the turnstiles.

At some point Dallas has to develop talent while putting out a team that can make a playoff push. A good team more than anything is what attracts fans.

I’m DTID but get Pepi away from this dumpster fire of a team. We need a FO and owners that care about winning instead of being greedy. We sell and sell and sell but never use the money to form a winnable team.

That’s always going to be an issue with MLS

Bc of the franchise model and there is no punishment for having a terrible side

There’s also not much return on investment doing that though.

You don’t pay the expansion fees MLS charge for a TV contract that pays the whole league less than 2 B1G teams and to sell players for $10-15M. You pay those in hopes that MLS can become the next NBA.

You can’t become a major league being a selling league. I think the best thing that could happen for MLS growth wise is for long time owners like the Hunts, who are content with small profits/losses, to go ahead and sell.

I think it’d be good for the MLS to get drubbed in the first year of the new MLS-MX Cup they announced. Guys like Arthur Blank would be willing to put a lot more money into their team than MLS allows.

The owners don’t care

They make money but not on MLS, owning an MLS team is nothing more than a place holder to get paid by the American soccer media rights.

Most owners don’t care

MLS doesn’t make money, so any extra cash from selling a prospect they are going to take. It’s not structured to be a top league

In the new Leagues Cup format MLS is gonna get drubbed for a long time. Even with a raise in salary cap only a select group of owners will push that number.

I don't think owners are paying the current expansion fees just to get a portion of Soccer United Marketing especially now that the USSF is taking its rights in-house. There should be concern that the Mexico national team will do the same at some point.

At the time SUM came into existence, soccer was non-factor in the US, so it was able to monopolize soccer media rights in the US. Moving forward, soccer is popular enough here that it'll be worthwhile for leagues and national teams to cutout SUM as a middleman.

SUM is kind of sleazy way for MLS owners to cash a check now without MLS being successful, but SUM is not a smart play for the long haul. New owners paying the current expansion fees are banking that MLS or some other SUM/MLS controlled entity is going to be growth machine. That's why MLS teams sell at startup-tech like multiples.

The new ones likely would. The old ones likely would not, so the best thing can happen for MLS from a quality perspective is for old owners like the Hunts to go ahead and cash out.

SUM is a for sure money generator esp with the game growing and the popularity of European leagues.

US National team matches is only a small portion

they get a check from everything else
