Question for car title experts. Complicated...

Leased a Nissan in 2004. Bought that leased vehicle in 2007 with financing from USAA. Nissan Infiniti LT sent title transferred into my name to USAA. USAA sent that original title to me to register in Louisiana. That never happened. USAA loan paid off, car continued to be registered in Louisiana for years with Nissan as listed owner on registration. Now I am trying to sell it to Peddle.com. Said no problem until right before they showed up to tow. Said I need to transfer into my name with the state (not what they told me when they made the offer).
So, now I am faced with going to the DMV to request a title transfer that is now 14 years late. Late penalties would have piled up well beyond what Pebble would pay me for the vehicle.
Any advice?

Push it out to the street and call the city to report it as abandoned.
Problem solved and you're welcomed.

I’m a bit confused by your post, but unless I’m mis-reading you never took the time to transfer the title once it was paid off? If so, sounds like your own fault and take it as a lesson learned.

Why would you pay penalties? The DMV doesn't care who the title is issued to as long as they get registration fees.

Sell it to a Mexican. They don't care. You're screwed.

wrong, wrong, wrong .. totally wrong
the penalty will be a percentage of the delinquent tax bill per year delinquent.

Are taxes not paid with registration fees in your shithole state?

lol that peddle site. Never heard of it so put my VIN in for shits and giggles. Offered me $7,500.00 for a five year old car valued at around $25k

they're not ridiculous for asking for the DMV title transfer. that's normal.
this is in Texas, but i had a very very similar situation.
we bought a trailblazer from a friend and used CitiBank Texas to finance a small loan. had it paid off in 2 or 3 years.
i got a new job and we moved right around the time we paid it off and plumb forgot to apply for the title. we kept paying for the registration for a good while and my wife drove it for another 3 years. then she upgraded and we tried to trade it in, but found out we didn't have the title. i kept it as my drive around town car.
eventually i got a new job that provided a car and we decided to try and sell it. unfortunately, citibank texas shut down and sold all their loans to different companies. we had our loan paid off before that, but Citibank NA had no record of the loan so we were beating our heads on what to do.
Our local tax office said that we could show the payoff date, our continued registration and insurance coverage, and apply for a lost title. The lady over the phone was ok with that, but unfortunately some hardass overheard what was going on and said no, you have to have the title itself.
So i started calling and emailing Citibank NA every single week with the loan number, VIN, and after a few weeks, threatened calls with the BBB. Didn't hear back after 3 weeks, then the title showed up without any communication.
Regarding late fees, Texas didn't penalize me for not transferring the title. if you didn't keep your registration up to date, i could buy that, but if you were driving it, i'm sure you would have gotten a ticket somewhere in there. ours set in our driveway like white trash longer than i care to admit.

doesnt make sense. Normally title is in your name with the lien holder recorded and they hold the title. If they sent the title to you after it was paid off, and you either never received it or lost it, no big deal. You get a lien release from Nissan Infiniti then apply for a duplicate title.
Registration is different. It is never registered to the lien holder. It should have been registered to you and you should have been renewing that every year.
Getting a new title issued can be a pain but it is done years after the fact, all the time. There is no penalty for losing your title, other than the fee for the duplicate.

I am not seeing what pile of late fees you think you owe. You said it continued to be registered in Louisiana. To me it sounds like you paid the registration fees every two years or whatever schedule we are on. I never can remember.
Having the title transferred to your name is totally independent of keeping the vehicle registration current. That’s what you are looking to do now. Should be a simple transaction.
I would go to a Title office/DMV express amd ask them what you need to do. Much faster and they are usually friendlier than the real DMV as well.

I just spoke to ABC. Here's some clarification. USAA paid Infinity 12K to buy the car at end of lease. USAA was not able to handle the tax, title and license on their end (can't remember the reason). So, they sent to me. I was to take that to the DMV and handle. That never happened (perfect storm of other events in my life at the time). State continues to keep my registration under Nissan, cause they don't know any better. USAA continues to service my loan.
I never paid the taxes on the 12k. Factor in penalties since then.
Not sure the lien release from Nissan would work, but I will look into it.

Puker up because the taxes and fees will be unbearable. The state is going to get their money. The best thing you can do is get it paid ASAP because every single day is another fee added.

Think my only option is to go in there and hope some penalties can be forgiven.

How much is Peddle giving you? Might not even be worth any kind of headache. Just donate it to the blind school.

Take to a street named after a State. Leave unlocked. You know the rest given I'm sure it's insured...
