This is completely false. N95 are vastly superior to surgical masks, which are superior to cloth masks. Cloth masks offer little if any protection to this virus, regardless of the electrostatic effect. He was just trying to convince you to wear it and the electrostatic effect sounds sciency.

Let's just say if he told you that, he's mistaken.

If your concern is self-protection, get an n95.

There probably is an electrostatic effect in other masks, but it is really one of the major reasons N95 protect the wearer. And also why you can't just wash them and immediately reuse them.
