They went full on caricature of everyone. But Kevin kinda got fricked the worst. He was always an idiot, but not literally stupid. And he was sharp in some ways (like winning a WSOP bracelet, for example). Hell, one of the best storylines to me was when Holly started and Dwight made her think Kevin was retarded, and it made sense. But eventually they made him actually stupid, which was a shame.
I know most people love Creed but I think he’s one of the worst characters on the show. He’s just too over the top unbelievable that he would earn and keep that job. Sure, he was good for some funny lines here and there. But then they made him a cult leader, thief, murderer, etc. good for a few laughs, but completely unbelievable.
But even still, most characters are great given the limited screen time they had. And whenever they were given more screen time, it suffered. The “Did I Stutter?” episode, for example. Stanley is good in small doses. But when you give him too many lines the character suffers. That’s what happened to Andy and why he became so hate-able. He was great as a supporting character, but after The Hangover, they forced him into a major role, snd the character (and more importantly, the show) suffered because of that.
Still one of the GOAT shows though. I watch it at some point almost daily.

i struggle with what disappoints me more, what they did with andy or kevin. they laid so much groundwork early on that kevin was actually this legitimately interesting guy, but decided somewhere around season 5 that he was going to turn into just this normal dumb loaf. its hard not to like brian baumgartner but kevin was such an anchor in the later half of the show

They literally foretold this in Goodbye, Michael when he tells Kevin not to be a caricature. Like even used that word. So the next logical thing they did was just that. That's always bothered me about the show. They made a joke one time with Michael having no self awareness, yet the writers seemed to lost that too.

Andy/Ed Helms should have been on the level of Stanley, Phyllis, Oscar, etc for the duration of the show to me. Once they decided to make him a star the show started going downhill. I actually mute of a lot of his shite when I rewatch and I completely skip the episode when he puts on his play. I guess other people liked it but every time he picked up a guitar or started singing I couldn't get to the remote fast enough

I agree that they ramped up the silly for the secondary characters as the series went on, and I wish they were kept reined in. But if I were to rationalize the changes in character, it's because it reminded me of the Loud Family documentary I saw years ago. In it, they behaved like a bunch of starched shirts in the beginning... but over time they eventually let their guards down, because they got so used to the cameras they practically ignored they were still there.
I doubt that's what the writers were thinking for The Office, but I guess one can argue the characters' "real" selves were what we saw later on, once they got too used to being on camera. If that WAS the writers' intention, I still think they took the levels of plausibility too far...
