Iron Bowl is biggest rivalry in the South?

From the front page of this site:
"It is said" by whom? Anybody who lives outside the state of Alabama?
It might be the most intense in terms of the emotion involved, but I doubt it is the "biggest".
After all, how long has it been since the outcome really had any national implications? And how many people outside the state of Alabama really care who wins?

It is said that the South's biggest rivalry is the Iron Bowl. Auburn has won six straight in this classic series against their arch-nemesis, Alabama. What is surely still a great rivalry has admittedly lost some of its competitiveness

Much more recent than any game played by Old Mrs.

If Bama wins this year, I believe it will return to the top rivalry in the south.

Admittedly, it doesn't have the passion or pageantry of the Egg Bowl, but it's a pretty big deal.

Not if Auburn goes 6-6, which I consider to be a distinct possibility......

It probably still is for Alabama...although the bragging has dwindled as the Alabama program dwindled..
BUT..in Alabama, it still causes divorces and ....
...just not sure I would say IN THE SOUTH anymore.
I think LSU-Auburn, Fla-Ga, Fla-Fla St are probably "bigger if you consider "the south".
If/when Alabama gets back to glory, it could get re-kindled

OK, you got me.
But my point still stands. Is it really bigger than Florida-Georgia, for example?
Not from where I sit.....
(By the way, the Egg Bowl IS passionate on both sides, but I guess you are right about the pageantry part)

It depends on your definition of rivalry is. If it's current ranking of the two teams or the competiveness of the game then obviously it's not right now, bama has been horrible lately. I personally think you have to measure the history, intensity and what it means to the two schools...any other measure fluctuates to much from year to year. If that is the case then I don’t see how any other rivalry in the South could be ranked ahead of the iron bowl.

A matter of opinion, but maybe you just don't like them or are just jealous or something. Personally I got no love for Auburn whatsoever and I feel pure violent revulsion for Bama ... but to me those two are without a doubt the biggest rivalry in the South and arguably in all of CFB. Their hatred for each other is beyond irrational ... it's a thing of beauty.

I think Ohio State - Michigan would get my vote for #1. After watching that program on HBO, it kind of made a believer out of me. But Ala-Aub, Tex-OU, Army-Navy would all be in my top 5.

I think it depends where you are living,,,,,
AL-AU was every bit as intense..if not more so.
I used to live in AL.
Now in Texas, the TX-OU does not reach the level of AL-AU in the old days.
MIchigan-Oh St, Michigan-Notre D are big too....
but the AL-AU is the only one I have ever seen split families up.......
outside of LSU-Tulane 40 yrs ago.

Sorry, I couldn't resist, but you are right as far as it being the biggest in importance to the nation or the conference for that matter. Auburn vs. LSU in the west and UF vs. UGA in the east have been the most important as of late.

Catfish - you've got the quote of the day.

texas-oklahoma if you consider it the south.

I pick Alabama-Auburn over that. The Iron Bowl splits the state in half. There is a more intense hatred between these two than Ok & Tx.
