Why is it pandering? It’s Week Zero, with not a ton of story lines to focus on. Just say you don’t like HBCUs getting any sort of coverage. And say why.

Well this is actually a good point , which I did not consider

I don’t think the national audience gives a shite about HBCU sports simply because it’s basically the minor leagues. We want to see the big league stuff. But like you said, nothing much else going on anyway, so whatever. And I know what you are implying there, but believe it or not, race is not a driving factor for college football fans. Most players are black from all schools, not just HBCU’s, so that’s a moot point.

It's fricking August. Which game could they have been at that would have put your snowflake soul at ease? They always do an FCS game - it's fun. Who gives a shite.

I get the Corso angst but they’ve done a good job of relegating him to a side character now. I’m fine with him still having a presence partly because it will be really sad the day he’s no longer there.

That said I agree with rest of the Gameday takes. It’s too long of a show and they lean way too hard into human interest stories which destroys the escapism of the sport.

I don't hate GameDay but with the other options it's not as important as it used to be to me. I used to turn it on hungover and get ready for a day of college football. Now that I've gotten older it's some combination of:

Cutting the grass before football
Planning and buying food for the day
Watching the SEC nation kickoff show since I generally care about the SEC
Watching premiere league soccer before football.

I came to the conclusion years ago that until we retire through the sportscasters who grew up watching Keith Jackson call the ABC College Football Game of the Week, we're stuck hearing about the same universities (no matter how bad a season they're having). Nebraska and Michigan can have winless seasons and we'll still here about their storied programs and how great it is to see them take the field.

Awww...I miss Keith Jackson. He talked a hell of a lot less during the broadcast than the current guys do, because it's a visual medium and you can see what's happening.

Gary Danielson is a great example of what you're talking about though. No matter what game he's calling or how close the game is, you can count on him delivering the same stupid speech about how "it's good for college football when the blue bloods are good." He then rattles off a list of "the Michigans, the Ohio States, the Texases...."

That mindest was shaped back in a time when most big college football teams got maybe 3 games a season on TV.

ESPN has done great work over the years expanding exposure to more schools and to smaller schools, so it's funny to see some other people in this thread complaining when they take a break from speculating about tOSU or Bama to talk smaller schools.

More like 10-15 years. Whenever they went to 90 minutes. Had to cram filler into that extra time.

Hell, I do too. No one comes close.

But he did such a good job of making the college powerhouses of the 60's and 70's seem like the teams of the century, we still have broadcasters treating them like royalty.

There was nothing like seeing Keith Jackson call a rare LSU game on an ABC Saturday afternoon. It was like the Tigers were being anointed from Heaven.

Does the fox show talk about all the conferences fairly evenly or does it focus more on Big 10?

I think it is pretty even overall, but they have been giving the Pac 12 a lot more love than probably deserving with the way they have performed. The B1G is probably overall the 2nd or at worst 3rd conference, so it should be a headline on a show.

Everyone hypes up their network games the most of course

It was so much better when it was a hour and a half show. It's just three hours of talking about Alabama, Ohio State and Clemson

This. It started to get really lame when the fat, bald producer guy began date-raping his way into more air time. Corso's deteriorating condition doesn't help.

But yeah, mostly it's the Disney effect. Talentless, child-molesting ghouls.
