Smoky Mountain Trip

I’m looking for recommendations on areas to stay near the Smoky Mountains but not Gatlinburg. We’ve been there enough times that we really don’t need to go back. Interested in areas with cabin rentals. Thank you.

Townsend - MUCH quieter than Gatlinburg and you're closer to the park, especially Cade's Cove.

Skip the Smokies. Try Highlands, Franklin, Brevard, Blue Ridge, Cashiers, Hiawassee, etc. Lots of options in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fontana Village. Take your mountain bike and enjoy the area around the Dam/Lake.

I highly recommend Wears Valley. It is a small town between Pigeon Forge and Townsend. It has a side entrance to the national park. So getting in to the park is going to be really easy. Has your usual small town dining options, mostly local restaurants. Actually has a very highly rated Cajun restaurant.

Dandridge. Not a bad drive into Gatlinburg and no traffic.

Lots of cool hillside cabins on Upper Middle Creek Road east of Pigeon Forge. Newer, multi-level with pool tables, hot tubs, etc. Perfect after a long day of hiking and have the ability to avoid the madness that is Pigeon Forge.

Haven't been in years but we used to hit Fall Creek Falls a lot when I was a kid.

Love Fall Creek Falls but it isn't in the Smokies. It's on the Cumberland Plateau and a couple hours away from the Smokies.

Bryson City. I’ll buy you a beer at Nantahala Brewery if you find me and use the code words chicken banned me.

We are staying near Bryson City in October. Any good recommendations?

Definitely check out Nantahala Brewery. Deep Creek, Road to Nowhere, and the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad are all good ways to explore the area and see the leaves while avoiding the crowds of the park. The NOC in the gorge is worth checking out and having a few beers next to the Nantahala River. The AT runs through there if you’re interested in hiking. Lots of waterfall hikes in the area as well. Tsali Cycles in Bryson City offers guided mountain bike trips that are a lot of fun and another good way to enjoy the remote and wild beauty of the area while avoiding the crowds.
As far as food goes, River’s End across from the NOC is surprisingly decent. High Test Deli and Nate and Nick’s are must stop places for lunch. Everett Street Diner or The Iron Skillet are both excellent breakfast stops. Anthony’s and The Everett Hotel are great dinner stops.
I’m pretty familiar with the area so if you want to be more specific I can give you a lot more recommendations. Everything I mentioned is in town or right outside of Bryson.
