I’m convinced these companies posting jobs aren’t actually wanting to hire people

I just can’t figure out why they would do this. A friend of mines son discharged about eight months ago from the Marines and has applied for jobs ranging from production assembly to the USPS. He has not heard anything at all. He’s helping me for now, but I don’t pay much.

It’s bizarre.

They want to hire minorities.

All companies are under diversity mandates.

There’s a huge JC Penny warehouse in Lenexa Kansas that was displaying a sign pre Covid19,

Hiring warehouse workers $12.50/hr

There’s a sign that now reads,

Hiring warehouse workers $18/hr $1000 sign on bonus up to $250/monthly performance bonus

You tell me.

This

It took me 8 months to find a job in my last search. I am convinced a lot of my rejections were due to my skin color and gender and not my qualifications

I finished my masters degree in January. I’ve applied for at least 50 jobs. Can’t buy an interview.

There aren’t any here except for natives and they’re either at the casino or with the tribe for the most part.

I’ll tell him to claim minority status and dare them to question it

He hasn’t reached this stage yet. He’ll apply and get a generic HR email and then not hear from them again.

He’s doing something wrong. I’d ask to see his applications and I’d bet you would find it.

I don't think you're far off. I'm an active Veteran myself. I have a full time job, but applied to several part-time positions within the past few months at retailers just to have a couple extra hundred a month to throw onto the principal of our house note.

I simply wanted something overall pretty chill to do for 10-15 hours a week. Put cans on a shelf, etc. I didn't receive a call back from any place I applied to at an average part-time rate of $12 hour.

A lot of these employers simply don't want to pay people and are hung up on the fact that the workers control the economy now. I don't need you - you need me. I'm not some high school kid working a summer job. I'm a professional with a good job already and will perform good work at a decent wage. $9 an hour to deal with assholes on the floor of a grocery chain all day isn't going to cut it with me.

If he’s filling these out in crayon again I’m going to be pissed.

Time to network. If the company has an internal recruiter, they should be locatable on LinkedIn. Finding friends and family that work the places he’s applying. Hitting up randos on social media is a little personally risky, but it can pay off as well.

The best thing to do is to fake a genealogy report. Make it show that you are something like 25-40% African, preferably African-American, and tell them that all your friends and family have always been black.

At least make it show that you have some type of African ancestry and tell them that you've been passed down stories about your blackness by all your relatives, even if you are white as an eggshell.

Find a gig app and go crazy. I have friends who deliver food for about $20/hr before expenses. If you’re in an urban area, it’s easy and flexible.

I'm mostly retired and have no desire for a " real " job. I signed up for instacart and work about 25 hours a week and make around $500 bucks minus $25 a week in gas.. not a bad part time gig, I do know others that really take it serious and make $50,000 + a yr
