Griffin signing 3 year deal just for good Summer League matches...

Like Adams's contract, extending Herb now is too fast

He's a 2nd round pick, he may not even be making $1 million per year. And the length doesn't matter, what matters are the team options/guarantees.

Giving out a short deal, like just a 1 year deal, is bad for the team. What if he's much better than expected? On a 1 year deal you have no mechanism other than cap space to resign him after the 1 year deal expires.

If it's a 2 year deal you have Early Bird rights at the end of it and can pay up to MLE money on a new deal if he blows up. 3 years and you get full Bird Rights. I suspect the 3rd year here will be an option year and Herb will be an RFA that they'll resign, or not, after 2 seasons.

He's a 2nd round pick

Luguentz Dort was undrafted. okc waited 29 games in the regular season where Dort was good to be able to extend him.

Duncan Robinson was undrafted also. Miami waited regular season and PO in the bubble where Robinson was good to be able to extend him.

Griffin must be one of rare GMs to extend a player while he has yet to prove anything in the regular season or in Playoffs

I am not against the extension. Just that it's too fast

the length matters also in that it means he's being signed using the MLE b/c you can't give out a 3 year minimum deal, you have to use the MLE to give out that third year if the salary is the minimum, which is what we did with Naji too.
