The USA TODAY Sports AFCA football coaches poll is conducted weekly throughout the regular season using a panel of 65 head coaches at Football Bowl Subdivision schools. The panel is chosen by random draw, conference by conference plus independents, from a pool of coaches who have indicated to the American Football Coaches Association their willingness to participate. Each coach submits a Top 25 with a first-place vote worth 25 points, second place 24, and so on down to one point for 25th.

Preseason polls should be eradicated.

so much so, means nothing and sets up certain teams to appear better then they are when they end up beating a high ranked team.

It can dramatically impact final rankings by making it harder for a preseason unranked/low ranked team to climb even if they're winning and vice versa.

It actually harms all major college sports IMO.

In football, they should wait until week 6 or so. But TV networks will never allow it because it is so valuable to them for hyping early games.

Michigan not ranked.

I'm sure Harbaugh will bitch about it in a press conference and be the top CFB story on ESPN for days.

maybe you missed the part where it was explained that these polls are completely meaningless. You think those voters can even name 3 starters on all those teams? NOPE.

Eh...I'd move them down by a few. I actually don't think they'll drop off a ton but they did lose some great talent and the D was shitty. I'd put them 15-20 IMO.

The talent level on LSU's team this season is very likely Top 10. Coaching, strategy, cohesiveness and injuries will be the unknowns on how many games that talent wins. I'd say a preseason ranking anywhere from 13-16 is just about right.

If everything comes together, they'll be Top 10 by the end. If factors outside of talent cause things to unravel, maybe 0.500 in conference, which will get the Fire CEO juices flowing in Baton Rouge.

They are there to push early season ratings.

The game sounds better on commercials with numbers in front of the team names.

Absolutely. Pre season rankings are driven by past results and future expectations yet a team can lose a game in a bad schedule and hang around the top 10 because of the preexisting biases of what they were expected to be. I'd love to see 5 games or so before we came up with rankings based entirely based a considerable body of play within the season.

But that will never happen.
