How do hotels handle hot water?

Do they have one massive water heater or a bunch of separate ones for blocks of rooms? I’ve never been in a hotel and ran out of hot water. Do they just design their water heater for everyone showering at once? That seems like a waste.

You’ve heard of tankless water heaters no?

They use hot water heaters to keep up. Regular water heaters arent enough

Typically at least two commercial size boilers, depending on the size of the hotel

Multiple commercial heaters.

I feel like I’ve been alive longer than tankless water heaters and still never ran out of hot water. Unless they’ve always been available to hotels and just recently available to the average joe.

Know by experience there is a range that some hotels keep as a standard on water temp in rooms. Sometimes the farthest rooms requirement makes the rooms near boiler to be on verge of boiling eggs.

Also the farthest rooms sometimes take a minute or two for the hot water if they haven’t been occupied in quite awhile

Do they have to circulate the hot water all the time so it doesn't take too long for the furthest rooms to get hot water?
edit: I see you kind of answered it above. So they just rely on enough rooms using hot water regularly to keep the pipes warm?

Most hotel rooms are dry as hell and my lips get chapped bad. I've dozed off with the shower running, to get some humidity, and woke up hours layer with water droplets running down the TV screen.
Water was still hot. Guess they have big water heaters.

Up nort'. And it is worse in the winter.
I've had cracked lips from one night in a hotel more than once. I always run the shower for a while now.

The shower is a good enough humidifier.
And right now it is 80 degrees and what feels like about 90% humidity in WI. I was melting outside so I would not mix well with LA.
