HVAC guy saying $2,000 all in to replace evaporator coil

Trane unit. Is that outrageous? $600 is labor and a bunch of fees on top of parts.

Fair Price. I had a 5 ton train seer 14 units condenser coil go out during warranty and paid about 600 labor to replace unit in attic. Good deal right? Well about 8 month later the new unit develops a leak, and guess what no warranty at all since the warranty was on the original unit only not the replacement. got me so worked up it F a Trane and had another company install a Lennox with some bells and whistles and a 19 seer happy homeowner right? Within the first year the condenser in the attic developed a leak. Dont worry under complete warranty....Oh but the factory is closed because of covid and we had to wait almost ten months for the new unit to ship. Got to say Lennox paid for the installer to come out and top off the freon twice...Got to think new units are the shite. Not in a good way.

Sounds about right based on what other posters on this board have reported over the past couple months.
Is the evaporator coil not covered under warranty - the coil (part only) should be covered under 10 year warranty if it was registered by you, or the original installer, for you.
Eight year old HVAC, odds are in your favor you have another 7 or 8 years of life in that system, I’d repair it vs purchasing a new unit. Evaporator coil leaks are problematic across all manufacturers - not uncommon for them to have to be replaced b/c of leaks at 6 to 8 years.

Bought the house a couple years ago, previous owner is like 80 in a nursing home and has no paperwork on anything.
Second time that has bitten me in the arse on warranty type stuff. She didn’t even remember where she bought the fridge that broke and was relatively new.

I think a HVAC contractor can look up warranty info with the unit’s serial number?

If you aren’t the original purchaser of the HVAC, the 10 year parts warranty most likely won’t carry over to you, but it certainly won’t hurt to ask.

I know Rheem warranties are non transferable because I had to look that up and disclose it when I sold my house last year and the unit was only two years old.

I paid just over $1000 to replace one under warranty and that included a bunch of Freon plus labor/fees, so sounds fair.

I had a parts only warranty on mine and labor was around $500-$750ish a couple years ago.
