I know there was once a time where you had to have a phone specific for your carrier, you couldn't take a Verizon phone and start using it on an AT&T network. Is that no longer a thing? I have AT&T and am looking at this S21+ on Amazon. It's 800 there vs 1000 through AT&T. I just want to make sure I'll be able to simply take my AT&T sim and pop it in this phone with no problems.

Also, I've never not purchased directly through AT&T. Can I buy this phone and still sign it up for the AT&T insurance? Is there a 3rd party insurance carrier that this board prefers? I'm kinda clueless here and would rather not sit on hold for an hour with AT&T.

Thanks!

My credit card from Navy Federal provides free cell phone insurance if I pay my bill with the card. See if you have something similar.

Phones come either "unlocked", in which case they'll work with any carriers SIM card or they are locked to Verizon or AT&T or etc etc.

If you buy it unlocked, you can pop the sim in and it will work. The link you provided was for a factory unlocked phone, so it will work with AT&T.

Can't speak on the insurance question.

You might be missing some features using an unlocked phone with ATT.

This right here.^ My first One+ phone was a factory unlocked unit. I was an AT&T customer at the time. When I took the phone to AT&T they put their Sim in it, but they told me up front that certain features on their network were blocked on phones that weren't locked to them. The only feature I remember that was blocked was video voicemail. A feature I would never use. As a matter of fact I have never met a person that used video voicemail. For what its worth T-Mobile places no such restrictions on factory unlocked phones.

An AT&T phone won't be able to pick up every band that Verizon provides and vice versa. I believe the way it works is the phone companies have to pay to use the signals from the FCC and each company has their different bandwidths that they use.

You will probably have horrible service using a Verizon phone on AT&T and vice versa.

I think you may mean Visual Voicemail, which is the GUI for voicemail messages so you don't have to call in to manage your messages. The other big one that may not work is Wifi Calling, which I rarely use, but have to use at least a few times a year when I go visit my brother out of town. I think there are a couple other features that won't work that may not have been important to me, but the above 2 were enough to be a deal breaker for me on unlocked phones.

As others have mentioned you lose a few features when using unlocked - Wi-Fi calling/visual voicemail and AT&T mobile phone transfer though Samsung has their own software that does the same thing.

You may be set on the S21+ but if you want expandable storage I think the S20FE is 10/month direct through AT&T for 36 months and Best Buy has a deal for the S20 Plus for about $600. S20 Plus 5G

You'll pay tax off MSRP though plus a 30 dollar activation fee.

Thanks everyone! I just went ahead and ordered it through AT&T and signed up for their basic $8.99 insurance package that includes $49 screen replacements. It's for my wife and I already know she'd be aggravated if there were things that didn't work because I ordered it on Amazon. I didn't know that'd be the case but makes sense.
