I'm not really too concerned about southern ties, right now. I get that it helps, but LSU baseball kind of recruits for itself, to a large degree, and these guys will get to know the south and make their own ties. Because, unlike Mainieri and Dunn, our current head coach and (reported) pitching coach actually get out and do the work that it takes to be great recruiters instead of... you know... not even recruiting at all.

Finally a coach going out and hiring the best he can find and not some comfort level of former players and some bbq guys.
PM was more miffed and whined because Cannizaro bolted for a dream job than going out and finding a capable replacement.
Plus when Cannizaro was fired he could have plucked away someone like Gautreau but he would rather keep it in house. Meanwhile that program was passing you up!

On the surface this seems like a solid hire. Similar to JJ, after the dust settles, we will realize we have a very good and competent coach.
Both JJ and Kelly are great recruiters, but also know how to coach baseball. On Mainieri's staff we had one recruiter and a bunch of coaches who couldn't coach. To have multiple nationally-renowned coaches/recruiters is a huge improvement.

I know, but he'll still hire another coach and it won't be a pitching coach. I'm sure he'll have a hitting coach help run his drills and recruit. That is fairly normal.

All PM’s coaches had player ties with PM or it was about comfortability. Coach J’s hires will be part relationship but mainly performance based imo
