I think I’ve decided on a new ego string trimmer but I’m looking for some input. I’m trying to figure out if I need the carbon fiber shaft one with the electric string winder over the standard one. The standard one looks pretty easy to load string.

Also anyone bought the refurbished ones off acme? Does the reduced warranty bother you? Any issues with long term quality from the refurbs? The prices are nice.

I have the standard and it’s so simple to replace string. Just insert the string and wind the head. A monkey could do it.

I have the electric string winder and it’s awesome. I have zero regrets on purchasing this one 2 years ago.

I’m sure the standard head is fine but damn that electric winder is nice. I don’t know what the price difference is between the two though.

I absolutely love mine. I’ll never go back to gas powered yard tools. The only thing gas powered I have is my mower and with 3+ acres I expect that to stay the same but blowers and weed eaters are going to be battery powered from here on out.

i have the standard/cheap one as well.

i bought the orange husqvana replacement string from amazon which works really well.

like the others said, its just a matter of feeding it through the middle then twisting.

pro-tip: i cut a bunch of line the same length from the pack and have them on a pegboard hook so its incredibly easy to grab a new string in the middle of a job and not have to measure it/fuss with a cutter or knife. since the pack is a circle, the cut lines keep their shape as loops hanging on the hook so it doesn't look messy.

Thanks everyone for the input. I’m gonna have to start mowing/trimming an acre. Mostly trimming fence lines or around the back of the building and some edging. Would I need a second or bigger battery?

this is a tough one to answer. the string trimmer battery does seems to last a good bit of time for me; i'm on 2.5 acres but i'm not trimming the whole area. mostly around the circular drive and wooded areas and ground cover by the pool.

what i was going to say is i am ALL IN on ego so i have a string trimmer, hedge trimmer, blower and chainsaw. as a result i have 3 batteries (bought the chainsaw without one); 2 are 2.5 amp and one is a 5. the 5 is a beast and seems to last forever.

the 2.5a lasts forever on the trimmers but i can kill it pretty quickly with the blower and usually put the 5 on the blower.

in short; i think you might be fine with the 2.5 but it would suck to get 80% done and run out so i would play it safe and get the 5.

I have two 5ah batteries. I use the string trimmer, edger, and blower on my normal yard routine and still have juice left on just one battery. Nice to have a second one just in case tho.
