Dunno. My guess would be if he comes back, that was probably sold to him as part of the plan.

I want him to return but as a late bull pen guy. His delivery and mechanics don’t appear repeatable enough. As a bull pen guy or closer the wild looking delivery is awesome but as a starter it’s about consistency and control. Remember Zack Hess? Great out of the bull pen but the mechanics were not consistent enough for a starter…and he was unfairly used that way IMO. We didn’t have a starter that could get 19-20 outs.

Coleman had consistent enough mechanics for it, it can be done. Hess maybe wasnt cut out for it, or got alan dunn’d

They needed to spend more time transitioning Hess to a starter. They just gave him the keys, and trusted his stuff. I think Hill needed more love in that category, too. Hopefully our next pitching coach looks at things from a broader perspective if Devin is going to transition to a starter. It's not an easy transition. And, no, this is not me dumping on Dunn.

His struggles have all been mechanical. His delivery is very unorthodox, so he has very little room for error. He has a tendency to either fly open or stay too closed off instead of through the mitt.

Yea Fontenot has a lot of moving parts to deal with. It’s real easy for a guy like that to have mechanical breakdowns when just the slightest thing is off time.

Correct. He's herky jerky all over, which is fine bc it's deceptive. It just puts more pressure on the little things. Other guys can afford to fly open a bit or stay too closed a bit, because they're quiet otherwise.

ETA: It's actually Ty Floyd's same problem, but it's less obvious because he seems quiet and effortless. He has a little hitch that really makes it important that he stay through the mitt...otherwise you see him spike it or sail it, with no control of off speed.

Of course.

They can try him as a starter and if he wins a spot in the rotation, fine. If not, let him come out of the pen.

Interesting. I haven’t noticed that. Which I’m a long way away from being a pitching guy so it’s not surprising that I haven’t caught it but I’ll have to look closer now.

He hitches just a little bit around his separation point. Again, I'm not saying that's a bad thing. It can be deceptive.

Yes, why not give him a shot. It’s a win win for him.

Why go to some crappy minor league team that won’t develop him. Spend another year at LSU, make a little extra money with the NIL stuff and see what happens in next years draft.

The positive thing about Fontenot is not related to arm problems.
His command was not as good, allowing the hitters to lay off his best
pitches because they we up in the count. This also caused him to throw
way to many fastballs to keep from walking people,

To a lesser extent this was what happened to Lange his sophomore year.
He was able to gain that command back his junior year and return to his
