Other posters are correct about hills: the only way to train for them properly is to ride hills. But here is drill that is good for hills- find some type of circular or there-and-back route. We used to do this in Audubon Park during low traffic hours, and it is a 1.8 mile loop, so perfect. Remove your saddle and seat post. Put the bike in a low gear and stand-up on the pedals and start pedaling. Go as far as you can and if you need to rest, just stand up on the pedals until you can pedal again. Not having your saddle is great motivation to keep going. Fransesco Mosier did this drill while training to break the world one hour ride record, except he was going uphill. Good luck!

interesting approach.. i'm going to stick to training methods that involve a saddle though.

Nice.. we’re on the coast for the week. Brought a bike, but definitely no hills

Sounds nice. Rack up the flat Ks for us.

Yea i saw that video…. All my road setups are 30-32 except for that TT bike that I have to run 25s on.
Weekend races are over.. finished with the sprinters in the road race yesterday but couldn’t do a good sprint since i’d been fighting cramps for the last 10 miles, ended up 10th. 40k TT was this morning. Got 2nd with 55:40.

Thanks man. Power was a bit lower than target but paced it well. Without the fatigue in the legs from Saturday probably could have gone sub 55. I ran it with a 60mm on the front vs the 85mm widow maker lol. The 85mm was probably worth a few seconds as well. Happy with it though…

Finally bought a drop bar bike. I've been waiting for a cheap road bike to pop up on FB marketplace. Really wanted an old 90s lemond or lite speed or lugged steel Bianchi. Then this 2015 Crux pops up for $400. Will put 38mm slick gravel tires to run it both gravel and road so it will be a little more versatile for me than a straight up road bike. Did a quick 14 mile ride as a shake down. Then a 2nd 13 mile ride with lots of stops as I concentrated on bike fit. The stem originally came at +12 degrees. I now have it set for -4. I'm 5'8" with a really long torso and really short legs. Usually a 54 will be too tall with a reach bordering on top short. This one felt a little longer than most 54s I've tried so the fit is great. Only thing it needs is a little grip tape. Must be kismit I have a Leyzene road drive pump I bought several years ago cause it was in a clearance bin at a bike shop for $10. Matches the bike perfectly.

Haven’t seen this thread in a minute.. How’s the summer going? Anyone doing any racing?
Did a gravel race yesterday. Heat index was 110 and the course was almost completely exposed. HR monitor died 5min before race started, probably for the best Got 10th

I’m just getting back on the bike from heel surgery a couple months ago. Taking it easy and just doing 15-20 mile loops close to home.
Anyone have some sunglasses they like? I’m over my Oakley Advancers. I can’t get a lens to last more than a couple months before the tabs break off.

I tuned up my old (2004) Gary Fisher Marlin and rode with the boys yesterday. I have slicks on it. Planning to do a morning ride tomorrow in place of running, because hotness.
So, that thing weighs a ton and I've been shopping used road bikes. Is a Trek 2300 decent? I don't know what year, I asked that and what size. Not sure if linking directly to the pic on Facebook marketplace will work. Also tracking a GT Tachyon 2.0

My go-to glasses for riding are Oakley Encoder, Sutro Lite, or 100% S3.

Nice! I don't think I’ve done over a 4hr ride for at least 2 months

We've had a lot happen in cycling for us since last post (none of it that great, hah).
1) Son got 3rd at the Big Mountain Enduro at Mt. Nebo this year. Categories shuffled up, so he was racing some guys he knew he would struggled to beat. He won it the previous year in a 'younger' age category.
2) He did his first race without us at Howler Bike Park. He went over with fiends and camped alone and took care of all his bike and such without us pitting for him. He got 3rd there as well in Pro. He got beat by another dude who works at the park and also got beat by one of his local friends, so he wasn't thrilled about that.
3) We went to Italy to ride Finale Ligure (and do some general Italian vacation stuff). On the first day, I ended up planting my face into a rock after going OTB. Fractured my cheek, broke my nose, and lacerated by lip to the point that part of it was pretty much detached and required plastic surgey. Italian hospital was great (cost me 22 euros). I'm a month out and all good now other than still needing to get some more work done on my lip. We finished out the vacation and had a great time. My son got. to ride 3 days total in Finale Ligure, and it was amazing. We will definitely be trying to return (I'll wear a full face next time).
4) Just got off a 2 week block of racing. My son raced the Revolution Enduro at Purgatory. Lots and lots of really fast local and regional kids there. His time was decent on the first stage. Second stage, he was on a full fire-road sprint and clipped a pedal and went OTB at probably 30mph. Completely destroyed the chinguard on his full face. We pulled him from race out of concern for concussion symptoms. He actually wasn't concussed after getting checked out.
5) Second race was the Big Mountain Enduro at Angelfire. Once again, a lot of super fast local/regional kids who spend a lot of time riding bike park and at elevation. Two day race. He had a bad first stage (that's pretty usual for him). Then he had two good stages and climbed back into a potential podium position. On the last stage of the day, his chain broke and wrapped into his derailleur causing carnage. It was the biggest pedal stage of the day, and he was looking super strong on it, so it was hearbreaking. Put him off any chance of a podium. He decided to just have fun and race chainless on the second day.
Overall, it's been a frustrating start to the season. Lots of glimpses of what could be, but just too many mechanical issues and wrecks/mistakes to put it all together. The good news is that this is generally how the ebbs and flows of racing go. A long rough patch is often followed up with a "leveling up" as the lessons get learned and the increase in speed/risk become more customary, allowing for increased speed.
Next big race will by at Nationals in the beginning of August at Ride Rock Creek. I'm not really expecting too much, as he's on the young side of his category this year and racing against a lot of really fast guys. But we're just going to keep trusting the processs.
