Oh for sure. I guess I’m more talking about families who home school their kids, travel non stop, have a second home in a training location, buy an RV/sprinter to makes the races, take plane flights to Europe, invest in 10k bikes, etc.. for a discipline where the VERY top athletes make maybe a million a year if they’re lucky but where 30-40k a year is considered decent and where barely breaking even is common.
The ROI isn’t there. But you do it because you love it. Our family does it because we love it as a family and are under no illusions that our investment will have any return other than we're spending amazing time with our kids doing stuff we all love at an age where a lot of people only see their kids when they can pry them away from their screens.

The boy moved up to Pro Open for his latest Enduro in Hot Springs. So he’s 15 racing against all ages. He got P2 with several mechanical issues (his chain dropped on three different stages). Hard to say for sure, but it looks like he would have won Pro if he wouldn't have been dropping the chain. Still got a 250 dollar purse, so that was nice.
That's pretty much it for racing for this year. Now on to wrestling season and offseason training. It was a good finale for the season.

that's awesome man.. dude is a ripper for sure
i've got a couple more weeks of just riding before back to structure. 150mi gravel race in March makes it hard to chill too much over the winter.

What races you have lined up in 2023?
I've got the Midsouth, Castell, Gravel Locos, and trying to get into Kanza (Unbound), and SBT in August. Also planning to do Bentonville's Big Sugar in the fall.

so far just Monstercross (smallish race up by Richmond), Croatan, and Dirt Diggler. Probably do BWR in Asheville. I'll end up filling in 3 or 4 more before it's all said and done. I'll do a few local crits and TTs as well

Nice. Good elevation out that way. If I get into SBT I'll likely go out to Colorado for a few weeks before to acclimate. It's not Leadville, but it's still 5,000 ft higher than where I'm at in central Texas.

not hard to get 10k of elevation on a 100mi ride in the mountains here, but we dont get above 5800ish ft... you can feel it, but dont really need to acclimate. SBT is a bit higher up though

The boy put out his end of year edit for 2022.
Flogan 2022
It's going to be an interesting year for racing. The main series he was excited about racing (Big Mountain Enduro) changed their age categories. We just found out today when registration opened. He thought he was going to be on the old end of the category (15 racing in 16 and under with most of the kids who can beat him aging up to next category) and be competing for the overall, but the change puts him racing against 18 year olds (and those same older kids who have beat him in the past) on the national level. Oh well.. just going to have to step up.

Just a little cruise yesterday. Since June I haven't been able to get any consistency in my training. Vacation, COVID, Achilles injury, sinus infection....hopefully this year will be better.

Eyeballing that one myself.

Same for me. I'm planning on focusing more on the cycling than the other two sports this year. The goal is to sit on a saddle at least 300+ times this year. MTB, gravel, fixed road, beach cruiser, etc. So far so good 4 days in.

That's a lot of riding! I just want to string together a few months of solid riding now thru March and take it from there. My swimming is in a good spot right now, my lane mates are starting to complain I need to move over to a faster lane, but those guys are fast.

Same story for me since July. Hit some nice PRs in June and then my schedule got fked by travel, people visiting me, and 4 bouts of cold starting in September. Build started yesterday. Hope to be going better by mid march or early april

A lot of that will be riding up to the gym to workout or swim. Round trip may be 10 miles total if I take the scenic route by the coffee shop, thru the park.
