re: Honk: People are quitting their jobs at record rates. That's a good thing for the economy.

I work in IT. I quit my company in the Mississippi Delta 2 months ago because they didn't want to give me the "Guaranteed" raise in my original original job offer....after I got them through multiple Covid lockdowns/quarantines, vastly improved their IT environment, and made them compliant with the NIST compliance required for their federal contracts. They profited millions of dollars off of those contracts....that they wouldn't have been eligible for without my hard work.
I started looking for a new job after my review and it took me 2 weeks to find a new job in Memphis. I'm now working at home and making over 6 digits while my old company in Mississippi is scrambling to get CMMC compliant for the DoD.
Quitting my job worked out for me. I couldn't let greedy Mississippi Delta blue bloods take advantage of me anymore. They refused the raise not because they didn't have the money....it was more about them trying to keep me "In my place". My former boss had that MS delta slave mentality and I was just a peon to them. Now they aren't able to get awarded new contracts because they aren't CMMC compliant and they live in an "IT desert" where there are zero IT professionals. They still haven't found a replacement.
Also I started a domino effect. I was the first to have the balls to stand up to them. Now the entire HR dept and half the accting dept has quit

niiiice. wait a year and offer to come back as their CIO for double the “guaranteed” salary. IT folks always get the shaft outside of major cities or Silicon Valley, because we’re deemed as a cost center or a service, when in reality IT is or should be the backbone of most modern companies these days.
and thanks for sharing. Also in IT and also haven’t received a raise in 2.5 years ‘because of the market’, but don’t have the stones you have sir.

I was basically their CIO. My title was IT director. I managed the entire IT dept by myself. I made every IT related decision, budgeting, purchasing, managed the servers/infrastructure, managed the cyber security compliance for the DoD, performed every fix, 24 hr on call, and did all of the grunt work too.

every job that doesn't suck is getting 10-100 or even 100+ applicants.

Half are just getting out of oil and gas because they see the future and the toxic culture.

That's pretty awesome man. Congrats
I dont think you're the norm. It seems like all these articles on wages and people not working are those on the lower end of the totem pole of jobs. You obviously have a skillset that can demand attention

Thanks. It’s been a long time coming but it was well passed time.

I don’t disagree. The “quitting without a plan” folks are going to frick themselves. I don’t know many responsible adults that do that.

Some here. Same exact position here. I got a promotion in title, but the monetary raise part is truly laughable. Like you, I didn’t have to stones to quit but I’ve been looking and have put myself in a position where I’ll be safe of my position gets eliminated, which it is. The stones/decision part looks like it’s being made for me. I have a job interview tomorrow that I’m really excited about. I’ve passed some certifications recently and the promotion ‘title’ should help in that regard. It’ll work out, but I have been completely taken advantage of for the last 2 years because I was dedicated and kinda scared of change. But, I did use the forced remote due to Covid to relocate cities.

LinkedIn's "Easy Apply" is a powerful tool combined with a well written resume. Just set out a bunch of hooks and wait for some bites. I did not finish my computer science degree at OM and I don't have any certifications.
All self taught.

So it’s that time where everyone is finding better jobs and we need some Mexicans to do our shitty jobs.

I feel like we are consistently on the same wavelength. You just nailed it. Our media is absolutely worthless.

The SO is in IT, is good where he’s at, and is now looking at a significant raise because some on his team have left to chase some other opportunities and the corporation is freaking out a bit. He could’ve found something pretty easy (he gets offers a lot) but felt the benefits (healthcare, retirement) he gets where he’s at offsets any raise he’d receive at a smaller company.

We have enough people to do the shitty jobs. They just don't want to do them, and we allow it.

The labor shortage is in specific jobs like waiting tables, flipping butgers, stocking shelves.
There is definitely not a labor shortage for white collar jobs. Indeed is set up so you can't just spray and pray when you're looking for a job. It takes at least some effort even if only a few minutes, and many jobs have a skills test. So people aren't going to apply unless they can at least make a case for themselves.
When you see 10-100 or 100+ applications for a job, those are legitimate applications.

Don’t dismiss the racial aspects of this story too. It’s a good thing that (black) people are quitting their jobs to get new, better ones or to start their own businesses... or they quit and are holding out for something better. Yeah... sure. What a crock of shite.
