Least surprising thing I've ever heard

It's because these people are mentally ill.

They have problems in life, their life sucks, they are failures, they see all the transgender garbage on sites like reddit where other societal losers and outcasts go and a lightbulb goes off in their head: "By golly, I have failed in life so far because I am the wrong gender! Yes, that is totally it!"

So they convince themselves their life is a failure because they are the wrong gender, and then transition, and yet the same problems exist for these people. They still suck at life. Only now they have mutilated their bodies to an irreversible state. So they have to deal with the mental anguish of being a failure in life, AND having a mutilated body.

It's no wonder so many of them kill themselves.

They have a medical condition known as gender dysphoria. This has been in the medical literature for a long time. It wasn’t until taboos eroded and western society pushed for outward acceptance of transgender people. The medical community caved and began a much broader use of hormonal and surgical treatments while moving away from mental health care.

In short, shame on the American Medical Association for allowing health care providers to treat mental illness with permanent elective surgeries without exploring rigorous psychiatric care.

You also have to understand that the “gatekeeping” prior to about 2010 was very, very strict. Psychiatrists would not make recommendations for individuals to start HRT until after they began living full time as the opposite sex. This was very much a cart before the horse type of thing. And you had to pass as your gender or Doctors wouldn’t allow for gender confirming surgeries. You saw higher suicide rates back then because care was being withheld to those folks who either couldn’t pass, couldn’t find care, couldn’t afford care, or they lost their entire support network.

I am of the opinion that things are much better now for those who are trans. They can get the help they need psychiatrically and physically and that help is available in many parts of the country. But....and this is a huge but, a lot of that gatekeeping was lifting and opened the flood gates. Some of these de-transitioners should have been more aware or prepared for what was going on. Some of them weren’t truly trans. Please keep in mind that some detransition because of things like no support, or homeless or financial situation. Mental care should be numero uno on any care list.

I could write a lot more, but it’s getting late here. So it’s a very complex issue
