We had a tee time today at 4pm for 4 of us. Front 9 is crazy slow, waiting 2-3 minutes on every tee and a few minutes for greens to clear on every hole, took over 2 1/2 hrs...

Back 9 a 4some a few groups up who I guess was the problem left and pace picked up, we let a few singles behind us play through but kept a good pace. We are on 16 fairway and it’s now 8pm, so we’ve played 6 1/2 holes in less than 1 1/2 hrs on the back, on pace to finish the back 9 in under 2 hrs, a 4some with a walker, letting guys through, overall I think an average amount of time to play 9 holes.

BOTH of our carts start getting slammed with notifications that they are “about to die” and we need to come in immediately, we are getting them repeatedly, we figure well we will just finish we’ve got 2 1/2 holes left. After tee shot on 17 we get a notification that our carts are locked, I call the pro shop to see what’s up. The guy is clearly mad and saying we need to come in right now and we shouldn’t be ignoring his notifications. I tell him we are on 17 and don’t just want to leave the carts for them to have to collect but also want to finish. He says no you cannot do that and I say well we are so come get the carts if you want but we are finishing. He comes out with two guys to get the carts and he’s all pissed, it’s very obvious to me that he sent us those notifications just trying to get us off the course so he could leave. I tell him that and tell him in the future if he calls us or sends a guy out to tell us they want the carts so they can lock up we would gladly give the carts to them and just walk the last few holes, sending fake notifications about the carts dying over and over is not the right way to handle it. He’s all mad and defending himself, I’m probably ruder than I should be but eventually just let them take the carts and we walk the 18th.

I get they want to go home but I feel like:

A. We weren’t playing crazy slow, the course was super slow and that’s what made us there late, not our fault.

B. If he would have handled it better, called or sent someone out to talk to us it would’ve been a non issue, pretending like both our carts just happened to be almost dead at the exact same time is bull shite.

Anyway I get they want to go home and slow play drives me nuts, but this wasn’t our fault, if you don’t want to be there late don’t book your course full up till 4:15pm when it’s cart path only. At the end of the day, the guy got caught in a clear lie and decided to escalate and yell at us instead of just owning it, and that’s what made me mad.

So am I an a-hole?

You were absolutely not in the wrong. He should have manned the frick up and sent truthful notifications that they wanted to leave.

shite, if it were me, I’d be on the phone with the GM tomorrow. That’s bullshite

I dk if I want to do that. It’s a college aged kid who doesn’t know how to handle situations, he doesn’t need to lose his job.

Nah. Seems like OP was just trying to enjoy a day of golf and got screwed. There's no way any of us would've left on 17 because "your battery is gone die"

something similar to me and a friend happened last year in sandestin........but it wasn't due to slow play.......it was a lightening delay.

at the recommendation of the club pro, we started on the back 9 because of a log jam on the front that had just started....and we knew weather was coming. around the 3rd hole, it came so we headed in. after we waited it out for like an hour, talking to the douche bag who parks the carts because he saw lsu shirts and made it known he was also from louisiana......we saw it clearing up and went out and picked up where we left off.

as we're coming in from 18, here comes clown boy greeting us, saying i hope your enjoyed round blah blah blah. mind you, it was around 5:45 - 6:00pm. we said, we're not done, going play the front 9 now. he said, no you're not. i said the hell i'm not. the guy upstairs had us start on the back 9, so we're going play the front 9 now. he said, dude, i have to go get my kid. i said well, looks like you're gong to be late. he kept going on and on, not in a mean way, but in a, "dude you really can't go out there and i need my cart" aggravating way. (my friend is one of the nicest guys i know and he was falling for his shite, and said man, we playing tomorrow and the next day too, lets just turn it and let him go). for some reason, maybe because we were wet, i did let my friend talk me out of playing the front 9.

the next morning at breakfast i said screw that........i called the shop next morning and talked the guy who had checked us in. he recalled telling us to start the back. i told him what happened. he asked for a name. i said i'm not calling to get anyone in trouble, just seeing if we can play the front 9. he kept asking for a name and said, people are complaining about a certain staff member a lot lately. i did end up giving the name, he confirmed it was him who had been unruly to guests in recent complaints. he gave us a free 18.

the guy wasn't parking carts the next 2 times we played there.

some people just shouldn't be in those positions.

Someone taught that to him... and if someone didn’t, they need to address it. Don’t work in the golf industry if you don’t want long days and shitty pay

Moral of the story is don't book a 4pm tee time for 4 people and expect to get finished before the carts are due back to clubhouse. Especially when conditions call for carts on the cartpath....you probably paid a twilight rate to begin with..so you got your money's worth. When u where sent GPS notification you should have headed to clubhouse...PRETTY SIMPLE! BTW where were you playing?

Again if he would’ve sent a notification that said carts must be in at 8:15 or even better send a guy out to talk to the groups on the course , we would’ve complied, or at least called to tell them we would like to walk the rest and see if they would collect the carts. It’s the fact that he made up some BS about our carts dying then got all pissed when I dared question it. Also it wasn’t yet dark outside, shouldn’t he expect people to play till dark?

If they don’t want people playing till it’s dark don’t book wall to wall tee times past 4pm when it’s cart path only.

I was in Dallas

I worked at a course in college. I typically worked in the shop and we locked up at 6, no matter what. It just hurt the cart guys who had to stay late. The few times I worked outside with the carts, it sucked when guys would be playing until after dark. But at the end of the day, if your second to last cart comes in at 6 and your last cart comes in at 8, do all your other work and go putt or play 9. Just be back for when that group finishes so you can lock up and go home. This really shouldn't be an ordeal unless you have somewhere to be. And to be honest, if you ha e the late shift outside at a golf course, you have to assume you are working until dark, every time.

Agree, it's part of the job. Golfers are gonna play as long as they can see. If I'm the last cart out, I usually tip the cart guy double my usual tip.

You're not in the wrong at all. I worked for a golf course in college, we didn't close until dark and didn't expect to go home earlier than that. I didn't mind it because it just meant I'd make more money and I loved being at the course. My bosses didn't either because it just meant the course made more money and they could potentially get paid more. Obviously the guy who did this shouldn't be working in the golf industry or should have clarified the carts were back at a certain time.

If this is the first complaint about him he won't lose his job. The GM would rather hear about the issue so it doesn't happen again.

If it's not the kids first complaint then he probably shouldn't be in that position. I worked in the pro shop through college and never would have done what they did to you. There were plenty of late nights waiting for carts to come in.

Do you go to a store that closes at 8, and at 8 when they tell you to leave say "I'm not going to buy anything just let me walk around until I'm done"

The dude definitely didnt handle it right, but the course closes when the course closes. You don't get to decide that. Just because you give them the cart doesn't mean they're work is done.

You played a 4some CPO after 4pm, you shouldnt have expected to finish.

Where were you playing in Dallas?

That example doesn’t really work here. They don’t have a posted time they close, at least not one we were made aware of. The sun was not down, it’s not like we were playing in the dark.

Do courses have a closing time? I know the pro shop closes at a certain time but usually the course closes until you can’t see anymore. I’ve worked at multiple courses in high school and college and there were not closing times at courses. It sucked sometimes, but that’s what I signed up for

Most places like to have the carts in by a certain time.

Some say sundown which changes daily, but that's not that important. They close when they tell you they close. You can get butthurt about it and not go back (and I'm not saying you'd be in the wrong), but again, they decide when they close not you.

I’m with that I am, but then don’t send out a low battery warning to try and trick me into coming in. Seems like if they actually closed at a certain time he would’ve sent a message that said “we are closing in 15 minutes and need the carts in” or something like that.

He knew he wasn’t supposed to kick people off the course which is why he sent the bogus low battery message, and probably the carts batteries were low since it’s the end of the day, so if he gets called out did doing it he has that as cover
