Explain our desire to swing at first pitch.

Is it to see how fast we can get to 3 outs? Is it so our pitchers don’t get time to drink?

Too aggressive and not good IQ

Want to keep this guy’s pitch count low so they don’t have to use any of their bullpen tonight

It's probably the best pitch you'll see in an at bat

It offsets our unparalleled tendency to watch called strike 3
Posted on 5/20/21 at 8:15 pm to lsuag88
And then always end up looking at Strike 3

if we swing at the first, we dont have to swing at any other pitches

At least some swing others just stand there, pathetic.

CPM playing for the walk I guess. Shouldn't pitch to Frizzell......

Maybe because your fellow t-ball legends bitched about NOT swinging at the first pitch?

Normally if you do that you are facing a pitcher who throws FB almost all the time on the first pitch. Secondly, you don't want to get into a pitcher's count and see their off-speed, as it must be good. This guys slider was really good and we can't hit a curveball, much less a good hard slider. So you "hunt fastball" and try to avoid the slider. Thus the first pitch swing. But if you are hunting FB, you need to be able to barrel it up and do better than dribblers back to pitcher or right at SS or 2B. Easier to say than do but these are national recruits that should be able to do it when you know the FB is coming.

It’s the same aggressive approach that has been ingrained in our hitters for the last 8-9 years and is borderline irresponsible in today’s game.

I bet you were not complaining when Crews hit a rocket off the scoreboard on the first pitch were you?

There’s 2 guys on this team that have any idea how to hit behind in the count and or work a count. The rest have no shot, and it’s not exactly something that is learned easily.
So that means you either hit early in the count or become an automatic out. It’s not so much the teaching as it is the recruiting

1st pitch is usually not a ball .

I don’t think it’s always a bad approach. The problem you get into is if you can’t square up a fastball and hit hard line drives. I think the biggest problem is PM is allowing every hitter to take the same approach. IMHO, you have 2, for sure, maybe 3 dudes that should be hunting first pitch on any given at bat, against any given pitcher, with Crews, Morgan, and possibly Dugas. Everyone else in that lineup should be looking for a fat one 1st, or “gap to gap” as some coaches say. If it’s not there, watch it and try to get deep in the count.

It’s a cheap strategy designed to compensate for a lack of discipline and/or the inability to recognize pitches in flight
It’s effective vs certain pitchers that like to get ahead then load you up on off speed pitches
Not sure we’ve seen many guys this year that can throw multiple off speed pitches for strikes
Bad strategy, terrible for an already struggling staff

Maineri makes his players fastball hitters. Most likely going to see fastballs early on in the count unless the pitcher is throwing backwards. Therefore, swing early, avoid the breaking balls. It’s a decent strategy against mediocre talent, but it doesn’t always work when you need to get a talented pitcher into a higher pitch count.

It’s a really good count to hit in

The pitcher had a history of throwing the first pitch over the plate to gain an advantage according to the talking heads.
