CBS Head Coaching Rankings

I know I know, O made a beyond questionable hire without even doing an interview. I know he went 5-5 last year. However, to not have him on the top 10 list is beyond ludicrous. He won a National Championship less than a year and a half ago. I mean for heaven’s sake Mullen was on there... I can understand Lincoln Riley and I can understand Brian Kelley, but I cannot comprehend why Jimbo is so high at 6 and Ed O can’t even make the list. Seems insane.

quote:Depends of what the people who created the list value. Mullen and Jimbo are both fantastic X's and O's coaches, who have also proven they can run a program. They have Coaches multiple top 10 teams.Coach O did it with LSU, but failed at Ole Miss. Coach O also can't coach one side of the ball like many of the other top coaches can.

I also don't think winning a championship automatically makes you one of the best coaches. There are over 100 programs, but realistically only a select few have the resources to win a Championship. LSU is one of those schools.
And FWIW, we haven't exactly had a dominant DL since Coach O has been here, and that is supposed to be his specialty.

He "won" a national championship! Whether he caught lightning in a bottle with Joe Burrow or not, his recruiting will keep LSU in the upper echelon. Completely agree that top 10 is unquestionable with current college coaching. OTOH, Pelini was inexcusable....but we move forward. 2020 was T O U G H.

I think his ranking is fair

I agree with you.
I'm not understanding why they're putting Jimbo up there ahead of a guy who won a natty. I understand what happened the following year and that didn't help, however, which of those two coaches won a natty?
You can only hold onto that success for so long but two years is still ample time to hang onto it, given last year was an abridged season.
This is why I don't pay attention to the 'experts.'
Play the game, the results will speak for themselves.

Why are you putting won in quotes? That is suggesting that he didn't really win a national championship.

Both of them have.

He put "won" in quotation marks because in the original post the poster wrote "one" instead of "won."

Ahh ok. I didn't catch that in the OP. I took it to mean he was saying they didn't really win a championship, like they somehow lucked their way into it.

Fair enough statement.
Which has done it in the SEC?
My point is I don't understand why Jimbo gets so much praise and O gets little.
I think O has some things to work on but you (not you personally, the networks is what I meant) have to give credit when it's due. And maybe they have. I don't know.
I just don't give a lot of credit to the experts who want clicks and viewership.
That was all I was trying to convey.

Jimbo beat the best team in the SEC that season to win his national championship. It counts.

if burrow gets O credit then crab legs made goody Jimbo.

Mullen does not belong on that list. This is a coach who has won 1 SEC East Title and nothing else. He got embarrassed by OU in Biblical proportion and I do not want to hear a damn thing about Florida not having all of their starters for that Bowl Game because MANY of you are O haters and don’t give him any credit for having 35 players gone from the 2019 National Championship Team. O lost 41% of the Roster from 2019 to 2020, lost his starting QB in the 3rd game of the year, and still beat Dan Mullen in Gainesville with True Freshman QB in his 1st ever start.
Regarding Jimbo, look at the disaster he left Florida State in and give him credit for inheriting what Bobby Bowden built and left him. Then look at how Jimbo left it.
Regarding the “Lightning In A Bottle” crap, well it is a Head Coaches job to build a staff, recruit his players, and win games. Orgeron has done all of these requirements. A15-0 National Championship Team which will rank as one of the all time great teams was recruited and so was the staff that made it happen. Without Orgeron NONE of it would have happened. So any of you O haters can STTDB!

Did you see our defense last year? He obviously can't coach either side of the ball and our performance is entirely dependent on coordinators. It can work if you have Brady and Aranda

I love how you seem to miss the obvious. Orgeron lost 35 players, both coordinators, his starting QB in just the 3rd game, and had key players opt out after the season had already started. So in your line of thinking all that was needed was a few “Xs and Os” and magic would happen.
What LSU went thru in that fake year of college football was a MAJOR REBUILD” on the team and the staff. Yet people like you give more emphasis to the Covid rebuild year than you do to the 2019 National Championship. The truth is you and people like you simply do not like Orgeron for whatever your reasons are but your argument is either naive or based on dislike of Orgeron because you ignore reality.

Jimbo has won as many national titles as Coach O.
Jimbo has another undefeated regular season and playoff appearance outside of the national title season.
Jimbo just completed A&M’s best season in 65 years.
Jimbo is 2-1 vs Orgeron.

Was Gene Chizick a top 10 coach? (38-38)
Les Miles was not a top 10 coach. His teams won in spite of his pathetic offensive strategies and antiquated coaching style. Great recruiting classes will be a constant at LSU (post Nick Saban) because of facilities, support, and other vital resources. Les Miles was not top 10 at OSU and certainly was not at Kansas.
Orgeron does not have a good record overall as a head coach. He may be a Gene Chizick or he may prove to be a good coach. If you base his standing on one season, then he has too many single seasons that would land him in the bottom half of the rankings. He now has a coaching staff that he assembled and the recruiting classes are totally his. Being ranked in the top 10 is about stability, consistency, and product maintainability. He will soon have the opportunity to show his worth. A repeat of last season and he may not be considered top 10 within his own conference.

With O’s background and overall record prior to 2019, I can see how he isn’t in the top 10. Don’t forget that O kept talking in 2018 and 2019 about how much he learned from coaching mentors and that he was a changed man as a coach after failure at Ole Miss. Then, in 2020, he reverts losing all personal and coaching discipline.
The jury is somewhat back out on O and that is why you don’t see him in the top 10.
