People voting directly for laws (we have this at certain levels in our government) = democracy
People directly electing candidates = democracy
People directly electing representatives = democracy
Saying "we're a republic, not a democracy!" is the kind of thing that might induce chin scratching and nodding at your 9th grade party but if you're pulling it any later in life it might be time to reevaluate some things

Direct voting limits the power within the state. Any state/local law or ordinance that violates the minority will be overturned at a federal level = Republic
