quote:I'm a respiratory therapist and deal with sleep apnea patients on a daily basis. Here's some things to consider:
Have anyone of you had this? Did you get the machine? If so, how big of a difference did it make in your sleep?
I think i have this. I am going to get my doctor to refer me and have a sleep study done.
ETA: I'm 6'4" 215 lbs
Sleep apnea, untreated, can be very deadly to people.
Untreated, your heart rate will go thru wild swings, multiple times thru the night.
Depending on how severe your case is, will determine how much better you will feel once treated.
Untreated, it will definitely get worse over time.
Losing weight helps if weight gain is the cause, unfortunately, that is very difficult due to the fact that untreated sleep apnea causes your metabolism to decrease.
I have seen guys who look like they could run marathons with moderate cases of sleep apnea. The anatomy of their neck/throat was the cause.
A very large amount of people see a huge difference in how they feel, immediately after using CPAP/Bipap for a very short period of time.
Google "Epworth Sleepiness Scale". Answer the questions and you'll get a very good idea if you have sleep apnea. You doctor will assuredly ask you all of these questions during the first consult.

I have severe Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea is "slow burn" condition that can lead to serious medical conditions. Not the least of which, if left untreated, can lead to oxygen deprevation to the brain, weight gain, hypertension, and strokes.
After a Sleep Study, my sleep doctor (a pulmonary specialist) prescribed a CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) machine and it was godsent to me. I simply cannot sleep without it. Advances in mask design have resulted in super comfortable mask. Almost like not wearing one at all.
So I urge you to get a sleep study done asap. Then get on a CPAP treatment. You'll thank us for it.
Good Luck, and happy sleeping.

Make sure you have all the life insurance you need before you get that sleep study done. Sleep apnea diagnosis is like having a DWI on your driving record when it comes to buying life insurance.

For those that got the machine, how did you know you need it? I know I snore pretty often, but feel like I sleep pretty well.

Been sleeping with a CPAP since 2010. Before that if I sat down I would fall asleep. It made a world of difference in how I feel now

Has a lot to do with the shape of your jaw and soft palate per my sleep study doctor.
I'm 6'0" 190 and I have it. One of my sisters also has it and she is about 5'8" 125.

Quick question. I am not reading through the entire thread to find out.
I had a sleep study a couple years ago, and I happen to not snore that night at all, and did not have any apnea. I know, and my wife has told me that I snore every night, and have a lot of apnea.
My question is, do you have to have a cpap prescribed to you by a dr, or can I just go buy one. I don't need another sleep study imo. How much do they cost? Does insurance cover one? Which one should I get if I do in fact get one?

I just got diagnosed a couple of months ago. Wearing the mask sucks, but sleeping better is so much better. It really can be life changing. My workouts are better, I have more patience, I don't get a worn out doing normal everyday chores, etc. I don't feel like Superman but it definitely has improved every aspect of my life.
I can 100% tell a huge difference when I take it off at night (happens inadvertently.. sleeping and take it off, then wake up later and realize you've had it off for a long time).
Fair warning though, the sleep study sucks, I barely slept, and the first week can be brutal as you learn to sleep with the mask, and it can take a month to start feeling better.
I am not a snorer so it surprised me to find out I have it.

Doing mine tonight at home.
After my Garmin's watch was alerting me my O2 was low. It was 5 points off from my workout pulse oximeter I use but it was consistent in that error.
My watch said I was hitting 82% sometimes which with the error is below 90 at least. Went to sleep doc. Said out of 4 grades of narrowing in the back of my throat mine was the worst on the scale.
Ordered a test. Well see.
I have a chest strap, nose thing, and o2 finger monitor to wear at the house.

I am 6’2 and 220 lbs. I had two sleep studies and found to have mild sleep apnea.
Here’s a tip: if you plan on buying life insurance on yourself.... buy it BEFORE being possibly diagnosed with sleep apnea. Once you have that diagnosis your insurance premiums will be much higher.

I know several people with a CPAP. They rave about them, but still act the same as before (bad mood, tired, sleepy, etc.).

Hadn't slept in years until I got that machine. I hate it and love it at the same time. If you need it, GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!
