The Orleans Parish School Board has formally agreed to rename 21 school buildings, a decision that will impact more than a quarter of the district's 76 schools, the vast majority of which are operated by non-profit charter organizations.

That means that while the school buildings will get new names, the charters don't necessarily have to call themselves the new name. In New Orleans, charters can name their own schools, while the School Board has authority over the names on the buildings. About half of schools have different names than the historic buildings they're in.

The board's vote Thursday came as some alumni at McDonogh 35, which became the first public high school for Black students when it opened in 1917, publicly joined a growing sector who disapprove of renaming their former school buildings

Actually starting to seem very Nazi like in how they just hunt down anyone who ever sat next to a person who owned slaves. Insane. That’s basically every male that lived 100+ years ago. Every white male if specific to slavery in the United States.

And black people will continue to murder each other. None of this does anything.

quote:

Lafayette was the author of the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in 1789 and a staunch opponent of slavery.[190] His work never specifically mentioned slavery, but he made his position clear on the controversial topic through letters addressed to friends and colleagues such as Washington and Jefferson. He proposed that slaves not be owned but rather work as free tenants on the land of plantation owners, and he bought a plantation in the French colony of Cayenne in 1785 to put his ideas into practice, ordering that no slaves be bought or sold.[191] He spent his lifetime as an abolitionist, proposing that slaves be emancipated slowly and recognizing the crucial role that slavery played in many economies.
