158 years ago this evening, Stonewall Jackson was shot by his own men...

After his magnum opus assault against the Union right flank on the second day of the Battle of Chancellorsville, Jackson scouted ahead of his own lines to see if there wasn't a way to press the attack in the gathering darkness. On his way back to his own lines, he and his entourage were mistaken for enemy cavalry and were fired upon. Jackson was hit and severely wounded. While his left arm required amputation, the other wounds were considered superficial and he was expected to survive. Fate would intervene, however. Jackson contracted pneumonia and on May 10, 1863, he succumbed to the illness.
The following photograph a "then and now" of the area in which Jackson was brought down by his own men:

Well, he did have comorbidities. Should've been more careful.

This single event is the "Gavarilo Princip" moment of American History in my opinion.
If Stonewall doesnt die, the CSA wins the war (or at the very least, avoids defeat)
eta: had a brainfart and fricked up my dudes name.

It always amazes me how some people can pass by an area unaware of the historical significance that place has in history. Like the white car in that photo, they may not even know that’s where a huge moment in the civil war occurred. I’m sure I’m guilty of this as well.

The souths best chance was squandered at the beginning of the war when they didn't take DC after Bull Run.
Also while it would still be a long shot, if Jackson was still alive and the south had been able to cause a draw or win at Gettysburg there is an argument this would have hurt Lincoln's reelection chances. There was strong sentiments in the north to reach an agreement with the south and end the war prior to Gettysburg.

All the comments about the South not having any chance remind me that it’s difficult to view history from a modern day perspective and be certain of outcomes.
There were multiple times during that war where the South was within striking distance of DC, Bull Run being a great example.
Granted, taking DC would be no guarantee of the Union losing, but it would have had huge ramifications throughout the anti war North.

It was counted as a COIVD death.

I have always enjoyed the civil war what if games.
Imagine if Jackson's reconnoiter expedition to the United States Ford was uninterrupted and that he was not shot.
Jackson could have possibly blocked the United States Ford and that would have left the Army of the Potomac in the Wilderness.
That would leave the Army of the Potomac having to fight it's way out of the Wilderness likely under the Command of Darius Couch.
Who knows how the battle would have turned out and the result would have likely cancelled the invasion of the North by Lee.

The then and now picture is incorrect. I have been there, at the historic site. People are directed to a spot closer to an unpaved trail.

You know the one thing I really hate about today's society is that Men of the South can't just revere men like Stonewall Jackson for who they were, and what they tried to accomplish against all odds, back then and the cause many Southerners supported. I live near Nashville and the area is steeped in Civil War History. Books like Company Aytch are fascinating reads from the common man perspective. I get all the other aspects that created the war, and we should know that as well, but gosh darn it I grew up idolizing the stories and efforts of men like Jackson, Lee, JEB Stuart. Part of my heritage.
