Then I think anyone should be able to take it, law school graduate or not.

Excellent point. Southern had a 50% passage rate for decades and they all just walked through the door last year.
If you can find the answer in the book fast enough, you are qualified to be a lawyer per the astute LA Supreme Court.

These law students don’t realize their future employers have asterisks by their names.

To emulate real life they should all sell their test to a group of 4 or 5 different lawyers and let them take all the tests.

Open book can really only help to jog your memory under time constraints. You still need to put in the work for weeks leading up to the exam, or else relying on your notes won’t be much help.

That said, this is so so so stupid.

I just sat for the exam during covid. Louisiana board was really strict. Other states weren’t as strict. It was crazy. No open book though we still had to take all 4 sections of the exam. There are no more blackout dates now but still have to pass in 18 months.

How many people flunked it last time? I certainly wouldn't want to hire a lawyer who couldn't pass the bar under these circumstances.

I dont like it. But why couldn't they have at least mandated this last year too instead of having a diploma privilege?

50 minutes for an exam on an entire book.

Not really an “open book”. More like “courtroom style”. Lawyers can use the code in courtrooms.

But on certain exams like criminal law and Louisiana Civil Procedure it is a big advantage.
