The Perseverance rover may be parked at an overlook to capture any flights by the Ingenuity helicopter over the next two weeks, but it's not wasting any of its time on Mars. The rover on Tuesday successfully converted some of the plentiful carbon dioxide on Mars into oxygen as a first test of its MOXIE instrument. The name MOXIE is short for Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment. After warming up for about two hours, MOXIE produced 5.4 grams of oxygen. This is enough to sustain an astronaut for about 10 minutes.

Can we start it from ancient civilization and fix everything going forward?

It’s cool, but I see an issue.

This means we need 30-35g/hour.

For future tests, MOXIE likely will generate up to 10 grams of oxygen per hour.

This is when a human should scream “I can’t breathe!”

The technology will only get better, and considering this is an extremely small scale operation, it’s a great first step.

Mars' atmosphere is 95% CO2 so the availability of CO2 is much greater in terms of percent concentration. Whereas CO2 on earth is only 0.04%. The low concentration probably makes it more difficult to sequester CO2 and convert it to O2 on earth than Mars.

FWIW, also don't get the impression that Mars' atmosphere can sustain life like the earth only if we increase the atmospheric O2 to 20%. The problem with Mars' atmosphere is not only high CO2 concentration it's low pressure. Mars atmospheric pressure averages 600 Pa. Contrast that to earth atmospheric pressure at sea level is 100,100 Pa. Even if the concentration of O2 is around 20% there is would be insufficient O2 mass to sustain life. It would be like trying to breath in an earthly elevation triple the height of Mount Everest. (The top of Mount Everest has 20% O2, just not enough pressure to sustain life.)
