Is modern rimfire reliable enough for self defense?
It’s reliable enough IMO. Not very powerful but better than nothing.
I’ve never once had a dud in decades of shooting .22.

I’ve seen plenty and have had plenty.
Heck, on my son’s trap team, we average around 1 squib per practice/match. All factory shells.

There was a recall on Rossi 38s. You might want to Google it.

You could look for an older revolver in 38 S&W.
I have one, very gentle shooter and accurate with about the same power as a .380

My brother recently bought a Heritage arms single action revolver 22LR/22wmr for his mother in law. They are lower priced guns but I was pretty impressed with it. The hammer and trigger both had very light pulls. The one he bought had a 4 1/2" barrel.

I have had some occasionally on 22lr, but I can't ever remember having a misfire on .22mag + they pack a pretty decent punch.

A. How much was fired thru a semi-auto pistol (rifles and revolvers are definitely more reliable at igniting the primer material).
b. You've been lucky. Or you shoot quality ammo.

The featherweight .38 is not a fun gun to shoot, at all. The weight of the gun (or lack of) contributes to the heavy recoil.
This is true

Mostly a Marlin bolt action rifle. Guess that’s the reason.

quote:This is VERY true. And they have lousy sights. And they have heavy triggers. The end result is that most people don't practice with them because it's very uncomfortable - so they never get proficient with their weapon.

A snub-nosed .38 is an expert's gun - not a beginner's gun. And it's certainly not a good choice for an arthritic 70 year old mom. That demographic will be much better served with an M&P .380 EZ.
P.S. I have had several "little old ladies" (and two middle aged men) who failed the shooting portion of the CCW class using snub-nosed .38's. Two of them missed the silhouette at a distance of six feet.

who failed the shooting portion of the CCW
ETA: I have taken the CCW so I know what I'm talking about. Hunters ED has more useful info than CCW class. In my opinion the missed round probably went through the same hole as a previous round. Who am I to judge, I cant see a bullet in flight.

Very low recoil due to having no ammo
