The more I look into new trucks the more I’m starting to like the fuel efficiency and torque of the 3.0L diesels. I don’t need a whole lot of towing capacity, so 9,300lbs shouldn’t be an issue.

Anyone have any experience with these? Any suggestions for these vs the regular 5.3l V8.

I've had one since December. Love it. Sounds great. Fuel mileage is incredible. 26 on the highway and thats with level and tires. Glad I went with it over the 5.3

I was just about sold on this engine, then started reading up on it.

This YouTube video sums up the issues. The main complaint is that the engine oil pump is driven by a belt off the crankshaft. Belt replacement (100-150k) requires separating engine and transmission, so not a 10 minute job.

I went to the dealership last week to test drive ( only difference is it was GMC sierra). I was 100% set on the 5.3 V8, but oh what could it hurt to drive the 3.0 and just see what it’s all about.... it was the smoothest and quietest engine, great low end torque that pulled strong from 1800-3000 rpm, and fuel efficiency is fantastic. I told the guy I had to go home and do some research bc I was reconsidering. 3 days later I called him back and placed the order for my 3.0. I cannot wait for the truck to come in. I loved driving that diesel.

Not sure what it offers over the 6.2.

I wouldn’t buy Fords nor Rams tiny diesel either.

Paying 50 cents more a gallon for a few more mpg is not more efficient. Especially when you sacrifice hp and tq.

Belt replacement (100-150k)

This was my main hesitation as well. In the preproduction testing there were 0 belt failures on engines that were driven well over 250k miles. They publish a 150k mile service life but it is realistically going to last much longer than that.

6.2 requires premium gas to get the specified power and mpg. So it’s actually more expensive fuel.
And 35% better fuel economy (23 vs 17) in the diesel means diesel would have to be 35% more expensive than gas to break even (2.50 gas vs 3.37 diesel) so it actually is likely to be more efficient.

I would expect better. 3/4 ton diesels are in the low 20's. I see no reason the Chevy 3.0 shouldn't be in the low 30's once broken in on a normal 2wd configuration

Now do oil changes, fuel filters, def, injectors, etc.

The 6.2 is cheaper in all those areas, and doesn’t need half of them.

The 3.5 ecoboost is even cheaper to run than the 6.2 and creates the same power, if not more.

The current lineup of small diesels is ridiculous. If they put the same engines into midsize trucks, we would have a much better argument.

Everyone talks about how smooth of an idle it is. The belt driven oil pump belt doesn’t necessarily bother me. 1 time maintenance at 150,000 miles doesn’t seem all that bad.

It isn't a real big deal. Odds are you'll need some really significant mileage for the diesel engine premium to pay off.

No it isn't. It should have been this way all along.

This will be a truck that I travel a lot in, so it will be on the highway a ton. Another reason I’m looking for fuel efficiency over power and towing capacity.

Don’t forget to factor in the cost of DEF, more fuel filters to replace, and more expensive maintenance i.e. oil & filter changes, etc...

Diesel is definitely the way to go for racking up extreme highway miles. You'll need to keep it a long time for it to pay off, if that matters to you.

Cost of ownership will end up being a wash, barring a major failure.

I’ve had one since December

I traded my 19 with the 5.3 in and don’t regret it one bit. With the 10 speed it’s super smooth and great mpg. As for highway I’ve gotten up to 30mpg. I tow a 24’ bay boat and avg 15. It’s an impressive engine and truck overall. I just lifted it and added 35s and still average 20-22 hwy and get 12 towing my bay boat.

I would buy it over the 5.3 and 6.2. Def usage isn’t an issue like some say. I don’t mind it. Oil changes at The dealer are 60-70$ like my gas engine was.

For comparison my 5.3 got 15-17 mpg driving normal and 8-10 towing. It had the pos 8 speed transmission that was clunky. They gave me almost what i paid for it on trade so it was a no brainer to upgrade.

I have 7500 miles on it and it’s been awesome!

Does this engine have the fuel pump susceptibility to water that I seem to hear horror stories about?

more expensive maintenance

I thought that would be a big jump but it was the same price for an oil change at the dealership. It takes 7 qts of oil so there may be a small additional cost for more oil but it was not appreciably more.
Def tank fill up is like $15 at oil changes. Again, pennies.
The heavy duty diesels definitely are much more expensive maintenance because of the robust parts but the half tons are like any other gas.
