From a cocktail book I really like:
1.5 Oz tequila reposado
0.5 Oz mezcal
0.5 agave syrup (2 parts agave syrup from the store mixed with 1 part warm water)
2 dashes chocolate bitters
Fresh orange peel
Place a large ice rock into a double old fashioned glass and set aside. Combine all ingredients (except orange peel) with ice in a mixing glass. Stir until chilled and diluted, then strain into prepared glass. Garnish with a trimmed orange peel.

Had an Oaxacan old-fashioned the other day in Arizona...it was pretty damn good.

Good move. The smokiness of the mezcal is a nice touch.
Don't stir it though. The entire point of an OF is to have a great tasting cocktail that lets the spirit shine. Why water it down with stirring? The large ice cube is designed to make it cold without watering it down, so this is completely counterintuitive

Very good recipe. I would only add that you should use mole bitters to really set it off, oh and flame the orange peel too
