I will never judge someone for grieving their loved one's death in whatever way they need to(as long as it doesn't negatively affect others) and you shouldn't either.

I always assume that the vehicle itself was willed to them or they were willed some money which they used to purchase the vehicle. Kind of like a "thanks for dying so I can drive today" kind of nod to the dearly departed.
