A big reason we lost last night

Despite the questionable officiating, one thing that is not questionable is Michigan's FG % vs ours. More made shots on 17 less attempts is a gut punch. In the two 4 minute stretches that we lost momentum, it was as if we were just forcing up shots. Got out shot and out rebounded when it counted.

Don’t forget bench points. Michigan had 26. LSU had only 2 the whole game and those came on free throws at the end of the game.

It all goes back to having a big man that has to take double teams down low. When the defense crashed in on him, that left wide open shooters to knock down 3’s. Had we had someone to match him, we win the game. They don’t have near as many open looks and all the shots are contested.

I am not a fan of Wade's offense. It is an NBA offense where you rely on a screen to help a guy win his 1-on-1 matchup. There is very little team concept. Passing to create open looks is virtually non-existent.
Thomas is a great scorer but he took ill-advised shots too often.

Or, LSU's poor defense ran into an opponent they simply couldn't outscore. It's very tough to win if you let your opponent shoot 53%. Could LSU's offense been a little better? Sure. But they still scored 76 on one of the best defensive teams in the country.
I guess it is just because, by its nature, basketball is an "offensive" sport. But perhaps you shouldn't look at it as "well, if we'd have just made more shots". And instead look at it as "what if LSU could have prevented just 5-6 opponents made baskets. Though they played much better down the stretch LSU was still a really bad defensive team this year. It is incredibly tough to simply "out-shoot" every opponent, every night. Particularly in the NCAAT where the best teams almost all share the same traits...they can defend.
The numbers don't lie. BALANCE is the key advancing deep into the NCAAT. Michigan was a top ten team on BOTH ends of the floor. LSU was great on one end (offensive) and terrible on the other (defensive) this year. Those teams have a ceiling and LSU hit theirs last night.

Wasn't the main reason why LSU lost is because Mich has a decent bench but LSU has no bench? The LSU players got tired because there was no bench to give them rest.
Right?
Right?

They were a really smart team that made good decisions. We aren't and we didn't.

Yep. Cam, as well as he played, just started throwing up some wild shots...trying to do everything himself. Watford also had an off night. If Watford has an average game and Cam settles down at the end, LSU wins. Oh well. Still impressed at what they were able to accomplish.

I was wondering; is this the same offense and defense he used before he got to LSU? I mean, since he’s been here, he’s had more talent with equal to worse results.
Does it have to do with his choice of assistants?

Exactly we play mainly 2 guys off the bench and those 2 guys or just ok players

Well, we did only have 3 turnovers the entire game, an LSU record. That’s a plus.

Michigan's FG % vs ours
Michigan had a better FG % because they had a significantly better matchup down low. We had to double and triple the big man down low which lead to open and easy shots. If we didn't double and triple team the big man he would just shoot over whoever was guarding him from 0-7 feet, which is a very high percentage shot.
Not having a big man to match their big man is why Michigan was able to shoot so well and ultimately win the game. It's basic basketball. I blame Dick Vitale. If Cisse was on this team and with his length I truely believe he could have matched up with Michigan's big man and slowed him down one on one that way the rest of our guys didn't have to abandon their man to help as much. And on the other end our shooting would have been much better with a big man down low.
Michigan's shooters are good when open. I believe our shooters in Thomas and Smart are better because they can make shots at a higher rate with the same amount of defensive pressure. We would have beat Michigan if it were not for Dick Vital and not landing Cisse.

Assisted buckets = easier shots = high percentage shooting

100% this.

Can you point me to Alabama’s “big man?”
2nd question: do you think Michigan and their “big man” beats Alabama and their lack of “big man?”

There were opportunities for LSU to to make more assist but instead of dishing it off when driving to the paint Watford and Thomas would shoot instead of dishing it off. Watford would just miss but at least he was getting some calls down low. That's a good strategy but you need to make free throws and Watford missed a little too many. And for Thomas, the refs did not call any fouls on Michigan when Thomas drove the paint even when getting killed down low. He should have recognized the refs were not going to give him the fouls he was looking for and resorted to driving and kicking instead just driving and expecting to get fouled. The refs were not helping Thomas (and that is a big part of his game).

We never passed the ball. That helped, because Michigan didn't have the on-ball defenders to take the ball from us.

It's the type of defense Michigan plays. They don't gamble. Smart had a great game. Thomas had a good game. The experts say that guard play is the key to winning during tournament time. Last night the big man was the difference maker for Michigan.

Played the season with 3 quality starters; Days was great, but not always consistent; and Hyatt was not a quality starter all year; plus the bench was non-existent all year!

We did not lose because of the refs.... we lost because of a ton of missed shots......
