First time on the Outdoor Board and looking for recommendations/advice for kayaking in SE Louisiana (New Orleans/Northshore Region). Just bought two Pelican Sit-Ons and ready to get them on the water, but not familiar with the waterways. Any advice or links to maps is greatly appreciated.

I went to Point Aux Chenes recently and it was very kayak friendly.

There are a few spots in the Manchac and Ruddock area where you can launch. Go all in the canals, maybe see some gators and snakes. Just don't paddle out into the lake

Great suggestions. My biggest thing is finding spots that don't have heavy boating traffic. For instance, I want to start at Fairview State Park and yak up and down the Tchefuncte, but I've seen Madisonville pretty crowded on a sunny day.

You trying to fish or just go for a paddle and sightseeing?

Can do sightseeing or a little freshwater fishing at these:

Cane Bayou near Mandeville
Bogue Falaya River, kayak launch at Bogue Falaya park in Covington
Along Hwy 51 (service road under I-55) in the Ruddock/Manchac areas

If your main goal is fishing and you're willing to drive a little further to the marsh:

PAC Kayak Rentals in Pointe-aux-Chenes
Grand Bayou Road in Port Sulphur
Launch behind South Plaquemines Elementary School
Golden Meadow public launch
Grand Isle kayak launch
Elmer's Island

Put in up the river in Covington and go further up the river past chimes. It's shallow so no boat traffic, a few sand bars to enjoy. Try Bayou Castine or Bayou Lacombe too.

Just sightseeing for now.

I've done Cane Bayou before through Bayou Adventure rentals. I remember there being a giant gator there!

If you want to sightsee go put in at black lake club in blind river. Beautiful back there with cypress trees. Will most likely see Eagles

if you go to PAC in those be very careful. The current can get really bad.

My recommendation if sightseeing is Fort Proctor. A War of 1812 era fort that’s only got good access by kayak. It’s on the southern shore of Lake Borgne, when you get there you can dock and climb around inside pretty easily

Some of my local northshore trips:
- Cane Bayou

- Bogue Falaya
-Put in at the park in downtown covington, travel up river as far as you want and turn around and come back down. There are a ton of places to stop and get out to play/rest. There are spots with rope swings up river

-Put in at St Joseph's Abby and travel down river to the park in downtown covington to take out

- Tangipahoa River- Couple of ways you can do this to aviod a lot of boat traffic
-Put in where the river intersects Hwy 22 and paddle down to Lees Landing.
-Put in at Lees and travel up stream then back down.
-I'd like to come up with a float plan to put in above hidden oaks family camp ground, paddle down to the camp ground to stay a night and take out the next day at the Hwy 22 intersection or Lees landing.

- Bogue Chitto
- I'd like to come up with a float plan that would put in north of Bogue Chitto State Park, camp at the park a night, and take in some where down river. Maybe one of the tubing places?

This can't be understated. A falling tide can make it hell coming back in from the south west.

This is a great suggestion...would be my first choice of those listed.

This, I’ll even go as far as saying I don’t suggest PAC to a newcomer. It’s probably the most tidal fishery I’ve been in and the current can really be a bear at times. It’s a great facility run by great people but an unsuspecting newcomer getting into some of that current can get sketchy pretty quickly.

I support this very much. I had to use a rope to tow my fiance back to the kayak launch. I was I'ma Hobie PA14 and she was in a Hobie Outback. She is only 27 but has psoriatic arthritis and couldnt fight the current very long before her joint pain won over. I was dieing I was so tired after hauling her for a mile down current for an hour straight....

Baw, you know the rules, you're only supposed to share the Fort Proctor info with other premium TD members.
