I think there was some speculation that he was a traitor in GFI, did he get whacked? Never made an appearance in GFII and no mention.

Castellano said he didn't want Clemenza to testify against the family, that it was way out of character. Then he says it was the money thing. Then, he says Coppola asked him to lose a bunch of weight to play the younger Clemenza (which Castellano says he did), only to find that he was just going to play the fat Clemenza.

The standard answer from others is that Castellano wanted more money. When he was cast in The Godfather, he was coming off of an Oscar nomination for Lovers and Other Strangers and his agent got him the highest salary in the Godfather cast. He assumed he'd make more than the rest of the cast in Godfather II. Not a hill you want to die on.

They replaced him with Gazzo as Frank Pentangeli, who got an Oscar nom for that role.

The book, well the second book (which may have been written after the second movie) was heart attack while cooking but some people in his crew assumed that it was poisoning that came from the Rosoto brother's and Hyman Roth. In the movie, its heart attack, and Frank Five Angels and his guy eluded that "that was no heart attack". But its unlikely that Michael whacked him. If anyone actually whacked him it would be Frankie, bc he stood to take over Clemenza's crew, or the Rosoto brothers who were being gassed up by Hyman Roth (I think that was their name in the movie, basically the fake Gallo brothers and the whole Camine Persico trying to strangle Larry Gallo in the bar and having the cops walk by and stop it, and Carlo Gambino and Tommy Luccessee gassing them up to take on Joe Profaci, and later Joe Colombo).
