We are an extremely young roster, so I'm not surprised nor am I worried about the early ups and downs. The talent is obvious, and I think as the season progresses this team will become a monster. There will be some hiccups, but I do think we're in for a great season.

With regards to Paul, I'm not a huge CPM apologist. I'm kind of indifferent, but I do think that LSU fans seem to be ready to run off successful coaches more than just about any fanbase not named Auburn. CPM is actually a great college coach by just about any metric. It's not the 90s anymore, and Skip Bertmans aren't happening anywhere. We want to recapture the magic of that decade, but that was so unique and unrepeatable. I think we need to stop and appreciate what we have in the current college baseball landscape. We have it good, really good, great even. It's healthy to enjoy good times as they're happening every now and then. Geaux Tigers! :)

OK, here's a "metric" that I find interesting:

Granted, we have one of college baseball's premier home ballparks and we regularly lead the nation in attendance. So the argument can easily be made that LSU doesn't really need to be playing ANY non-conference away games.
Except....to prepare the team for the postseason (and, you know, a place called Omaha)...wouldn't it be prudent to play a semi-rigorous national non-conference schedule, like so many other teams do in basketball and softball?

But we usually don't. Sometimes, yes, we've played in that Minute Maid tournament in Houston.

Consider this, though: Since Mainieri and the Tigers won the College World Series title in 2009, LSU has played only six regular season, non-conference, out-of-state games (except for the nine played at Minute Maid).

So here's the metric. I counted up all of Mainieri's non-conference, out-of-state games since the 2009 season. The list includes all NCAA tournament games that were played out of state, including 14 that were played in Omaha.

Total LSU games non-conference, out-of-state: 36
Games won: 15
Games lost: 21

Included in that 15-21 record:
Games in Minute Maid tournament: 5-4
Regular season (2019) at Texas: 0-3
Regular season at Lamar and Notre Dame (2016): 2-1
Record in regionals not in BR: 3-4
Record at Omaha CWS: 5-9

I don't know how this stacks up against, say, Vanderbilt or Florida. I know Vandy has played in that Dodger Stadium tournament a couple of times.
My point is, I think LSU's rather mediocre 15-21 in these games accurately reflects the rather mediocre coach that Mainieri has been since his championship season.

Feel free to discuss among yourselves as only the Rant can.
