For folks with 2+ kids, what made you stop at 2 or go for a 3rd one?

We have two boys 5 and 3. We can't decide if we should try for a 3rd one hoping for a girl this time around. On one hand, my wife and I are just about returning to some kind of a set predictable evening and night routine (and we are loving it) after 5 years of disturbed sleeps, diaper changes, potty and sleep training and all the usual craziness that comes with little kids. It seemed like it would never end and we are enjoying our time now and maybe that's a bit selfish.
On the other hand, it feels like we might regret not going for a 3rd child later in life when it is too late. Wife is 37 and I am 39, so we have to decide soon I guess, one way or the other.
For folks that decided to stay with 2 or go for a 3rd one, what was your decision making process?

Had a friend in this exact same situation. They pulled the trigger, and ended up having Twins.

Speaking on behalf of my parents, "surely it can't happen this time."

We got a boy and a girl and are financially stable and comfortable with two. Adding a third to us would make our situation difficult so we are happy where we are at.

We have two and both want a third. Our main hangup is money and our careers. We have finally gotten ahead and been able to start to save and live a more comfortable lifestyle and neither of us can really afford to take time away from work right now.

Money is the leading factor. Do I want a zoo and raise them in the poor house? Or do I want to have a quality and comfortable life and still pass something on?

Sex. The answer is I like doing the sex with my wife. Especially when she is pregnant.

We had girl then boy. Labor was more demanding that normal on my wife and we had kids early in our marriage and life. We too were enjoying the "me time" that comes in the stage of getting kids through diapers.
We just felt like "this is us, we are complete"

Two is the hardest number until you get to about five.
Two kids fight. Three is no more difficult than two.
As for financials, there's always a lot more flex in your budget than you realize until you have to squeeze. I like kids, though, and I'm glad I had a bunch and close. I love my family.

Had twin girls to kick start it but wanted a boy and luckily got him on #3. Attempted to give him a little brother but #4 was a little sister.
3 girls, 1 boy. That’s where I called it quits. I love them more than anything but I couldn’t risk the chance of a having a 4th daughter.
